"Sweet Jane" is a song by American rock band the Velvet Underground. The song was written by Lou Reed, who was often quoted as saying that the Cowboy Junkies' version was his favorite.

Number 645 in our listener all-time favorite album countdown. "The Trinity Session," the second album by Cowboy Junkies, came out in 1988. The music was recorded inside Toronto's Church of the Holy Trinity on November 27, 1987, with the band circled around a single microphone. To better persuade the officials of the historic church, the band claimed to be The Timmins Family Singers and said they were recording a Christmas special for radio.

Lou Reed could be particularly grumpy about interpretations of his music, especially the many takes on his "Sweet Jane." There was one, however, that he actually liked: This swoon-worthy take by the Cowboy Junkies.
According to the BBC, Reed himself called the Canadian band's 1988 version "the best and most authentic version I have ever heard."

It's no secret: Lou Reed, the inimitable Velvet Underground frontman was a bit of a cranky dude. Just ask any journalist who interviewed him and they'll define him, with a smirk and a politically correct reserve and respect, as prickly. He could be particularly grumpy about interpretations of his music, especially the many takes on his "Sweet Jane." There was one, however, that he actually liked: This one by the Cowboy Junkies.
According to the BBC, Reed himself called the Canadian band's 1988 version "the best and most authentic version I have ever heard."

'The Trinity Session' is the band's second album and it was recorded inside Toronto's Church of the Holy Trinity on November 27, 1987, with the band circled around a single microphone. The church was suggested as the recording space because of its natural reverb. To better persuade the officials of the historic church, the band claimed to be The Timmins Family Singers and said they were recording a Christmas special for radio.

The music from The Trinity Session was inspired by the music Cowboy Junkies heard on tour for their debut LP, Whites Off Earth Now. The album was recorded live on a two-track RDAT using a single microphone.
