Cincinnati-born, Los Angeles-based artist Sudan Archives dazzles on her debut album 'Athena'. The release combines Sudanese and West African influences with her talents on violin, an instrument she taught herself how to play by ear back in the fourth grade.
In the video, Sudan ends the clip with a snippet of another Athena track, "Black Vivaldi Sonata." She explained in a press release:
“'Confessions,' a female flip on classic rap music videos – resilient women surviving in a world that seems to be falling apart & ends with its alter ego 'Black Vivaldi,' an ode to duality. It’s about being the seduced and the seductress, it’s about God & the Devil, Yin & Yang, & about the possibility that we might have it all wrong about the two.”
"Confessions" was a KEXP Song of the Day in 2019. Subscribe and download it for free here:

In a New York Times interview, Brittney Parks, who records as Sudan Archives, talked about her debut studio album, Athena, and her boa constrictor. Her pet snake is also “kind of like the theme of the album,” she said. “It’s like me — people are sometimes intimidated by me, just because of how I look. The album is about duality and also about being misinterpreted. People are afraid and they almost scream when they see him, but look how cute and shiny he is! He don’t want to hurt nobody.” https://nyti.ms/372Xnb4

Songwriter/violinist Brittney Parks constructed Athena as an album to be heard end-to-end. It starts as biography, reaching back to remake "Did You Know" — the first song she recorded as a teenager — followed by "Confessions."
"It’s about duality and this battle within your inner thoughts, and you’re trying to figure out what’s right and what’s wrong, and it leads to this sense of oneness where nothing’s really right and nothing’s really wrong. Your life is just crazy, girl! And it has this magical twist on it, and it’s supposed to be this soundtrack of the making of a goddess." https://www.nytimes.com/2019/11/04/arts/music/sudan-archives-athena.html

According to director Nathan R. Smith (DRAM, Joey Bada$$, 2 Chainz), the video showcases “female excellence in a unique and dynamic way… I like to think of the women in the video as the angels that Sudan references in the pre-chorus. As the world around them is not very pretty and begins to fall apart towards the end, they maintain their confidence and are completely unfazed.”
