Before releasing their first album, the husband and wife team that make up Shovels and Rope provided back-up support for other artists such as Justin Townes Earle, Hayes Carll, and the Felice Brothers. That album entitled 'O' Be Joyful' was released in 2012 and garnered them a Best Emerging Artist award at the 2013 Americana Music Honors & Awards.
