Kinshasa native Jupiter Bokondji is evidence of the rich talent coming from the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo. His project Jupiter & Okwess fuses traditional Congolese music styles like soukous, rumba, and kwassa kwassa with more universal ones like rock, funk, and blues for something completely unique and yet wholly universal.

KEXP + Starbucks present And To All A Good Home, a benefit series supporting Mary’s Place and the No Child Sleeps Outside campaign, featuring Jupiter & Okwess. Mary’s Place provides safe, inclusive shelter and services that support women, children and families on their journey out of homelessness. Particularly during this pandemic, the safest place for a family to be is in their own home. Whether in shelter or a car or a tent, Mary’s Place priority is to help families find housing as quickly as possible, and to stay housed through these challenging economic times. and YOU CAN STILL DONATE with 100% of your donations going to families in need via the links below: https://www.jupiterandokwess.com http://nochildsleepsoutside.org http://www.marysplaceseattle.org http://www.kexp.org

Jupiter Bokondji Ilola, now 54, didn’t choose a comfortable path. As the son of a diplomat from Zaire, he spent much of his childhood in Tanzania and East Germany, and he could have pursued an education in Europe. Instead he left his family as a teenager to live in Kinshasa, the capital, and began working as a musician. Like many African musicians, Jupiter writes socially conscious admonitions to be carried by dance grooves; he has billed himself as the “rebel general.”

Jupiter Bokondji comes from the troubled capital of Democratic Republic of the Congo. Jupiter and his band Okwess play music that feels both African and American, with Jupiter's early musical tastes inspired by The Jackson 5, James Brown and Kool and the Gang, plus the sounds of Motown.
