The members of Hookworms go only by their initials (MJ on vocals, keyboards, and production; JW and SS on guitars; MB on bass; and JN on drums) to avoid putting themselves above their music.

Unlike the intestinal, blood-feeding, parasitic roundworms, Hookworms were an English five-piece psychedelic/noise rock band from Leeds/Halifax active from 2010-2018.

Hookworms are from Leeds, England. Hookworms frontman Matthew Johnson told the Guardian that "Ullswater" refers to a spot in the Lake District, a mountainous region in North West England, where Johnson’s father used to take him before he developed Alzheimer’s. “My dad was – is – into poetry,” he says. “When I was very young, he introduced me to Dylan Thomas, Sylvia Plath and then Neil Young. A lot of those things went on to really shape my life, so it was important to get the lyrics right. Alzheimer’s is talked of with shame, in the way cancer was in the 1960s. But that absolutely needs to change, because it’s going to affect so many of us.”
