Request for Meghan in Seattle! New Order came up with the rhythm of this song when they were experimenting with a new Oberheim DMX drum machine. Peter Hook explained: "Bernard [Sumner] and Stephen [Morris] were the instigators. It was their enthusiasm for new technology. The drum pattern was ripped off from a Donna Summer B-side." (The song also samples Kraftwerk's "Uranium.")

According to Bernard Sumner, "Blue Monday" was influenced by four songs: the arrangement came from "Dirty Talk", by Klein + M.B.O.; the signature bassline with octaves came from Sylvester's disco classic, "You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)"; the house beat came from "Our Love", by Donna Summer; and the long keyboard pad on the intro and outro was sampled from the Kraftwerk song "Uranium", from the Radio-Activity album. -- Did you know that, when New Order got their hands on new technology, a sampler called Emulator by E-mu Systems, which first hit the market in 1981. they sampled their own farts? It's Kevin's final show full-time on Drive Time: thank you! New Order came up with the rhythm when they were experimenting with a new Oberheim DMX drum machine they had purchased. "Blue Monday" is the best-selling 12-inch single of all time in Britain, a fact pointed out in the movie 24 Hour Party people, which chronicles the rise of their label, Factory Records. -- New Order came up with the rhythm when they were experimenting with a new Oberheim DMX drum machine they had purchased. In the Guardian newspaper of February 24, 2006, Peter Hook explained: "Bernard [Sumner] and Stephen [Morris] were the instigators. It was their enthusiasm for new technology. The drum pattern was ripped off from a Donna Summer B-side. We'd finished the drum pattern and we were really happy, then Steve accidentally kicked out the drum machine lead so we had to start from scratch and it was never as good...."
