David Bowie produced this track and that's his magnificent backing vocal, a lovely counterpoint to Lou Reed's singing-speaking.

According to Doug Yule, this song came out of a conversation between Reed and Velvet Underground manager Stephen Sesnick: "Steve was there going on about "how we needed airplay", and Lou said "I have this song 'Satellite of Love', and he mentioned the satellite that had just gone up which was a big deal in the news at the time, cause the space race was happening, and Steve Sesnick said 'Yeah, yeah – that'll do it!'"

A song Lou Reed wrote during the space race and his The Velvet Underground days, but it didn't make the cut at the time. It showed up on his solo release, 'Transformer' in 1972
