Armed Forces was released *44* years ago today! Armed Forces has appeared on several best-of lists. In 1993, the album placed at number 61 on The Times' 100 Best Albums of All Time list. In 2000, it was voted number 264 in the third edition of English writer Colin Larkin's book All Time Top 1000 Albums (2000). The same year, Q placed Armed Forces at number 45 in its list of the "100 Greatest British Albums Ever". In 2003, the album was ranked number 482 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, and then was moved to number 475 on an updated list in 2012. NME and Sounds ranked Armed Forces at numbers 89 and 67 in 1985 and 1986, respectively, on lists compiling the 100 greatest albums of all time. The album was also included in the 2018 edition of Robert Dimery's book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.

#338 on our listeners' top albums of the past 50 years! -- From the Pitchfork review for 'Armed Forces': "It could be said that Elvis Costello had the distinct pleasure of living out the ultimate dream of every sharp-witted, incurably bitter young bastard with hopes of achieving stardom. With superstar status and a reputation for pushing the envelope, Costello was able to crystallize the thematic threads of political and personal devastation that ran through his first two records into the concept of "emotional fascism," the original title for 'Armed Forces.' https://bit.ly/3mDOniy

Celebrating 1979 this week, as part of KEXP/KCMU's 50th Anniversary! "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding" is a 1974 song written by English singer/songwriter Nick Lowe. Initially released by Lowe with his band Brinsley Schwarz on their 1974 album The New Favourites of... Brinsley Schwarz, the song was released as a single and did not chart. The song was most famously covered by Elvis Costello and the Attractions, who recorded a version of the song that was released as a B-side to Lowe's 1978 solo single "American Squirm". The cover saw great popularity and was later included on the American version of Costello's 1979 album Armed Forces. https://bit.ly/3OyOEQx
