"KOKOROKO arose out of a feeling of lack; upon discussing their shared love of London afrobeat groups, co-founders Sheila Maurice-Grey and Onome Edgeworth realized that the scene was failing to represent the diasporas they grew up in. True to their name (which means ‘be strong’ in Urhobo) the 8-piece female-led collective has continued to carve out a unique musical style – one that refuses to be pigeonholed or categorized. Even with their genre-defying sound, KOKOROKO acknowledge their forebears with pride. Following in the tradition of Afrobeat and Highlife pioneers such as Fela Kuti, Tony Allen, and Ebo Taylor, the group combine these influences with the jazz legacies of Miles Davis, Freddie Hubbard, and Patrice Rushen.: https://www.thelineofbestfit.com/new-music/discovery/kokoroko-somethings-going-on |

Hear anything familiar? Yes, the drum intro is quite famous; it was borrowed from "Be My Baby," a 1963 hit by The Ronettes. -- Read KEXP's Review Revue feature on the 12" single: https://www.kexp.org/read/2016/12/15/review-revue-the-jesus-and-mary-chain-just-like-honey-12-single/ https://themarychain.com/ |

This was the first Ronettes song produced by Phil Spector and released on his label, Philles Records. It exemplified Spector's "Wall Of Sound" production technique, where he layered lots of instruments and used echo effects. The Ronettes were Veronica (Ronnie) Bennett, her sister Estelle Bennett and their cousin Nedra Talley. Phil fell in love with Veronica's voice and immediately went about signing the group to Philles. -- Veronica Bennett was the only Ronette to sing on this. Phil Spector rehearsed her for weeks and had her do 42 takes before he got the sound he wanted. Spector and Bennett got married in 1968, and they divorced in 1974. |

Pakastani-British singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Natasha Khan (Bat for Lashes)cites Donnie Darko as one of her favorite films, whose influence can be seen in her suitably creepy, stunt-filled video for this fantastic song. As well, video director Dougal Wilson also explained how Khan "is really into that scene in ET when they’re cycling over the forest. It’s really beautiful. We were [also] sort of ripping that off." https://vimeo.com/14454515 |

"In the five years since the band’s prior album, 'Death Song,' and the two-plus years spent working on 'Wilderness of Mirrors,' pandemics, political tumult and the ongoing devastation of the environment have provided ample fodder for the Black Angels’ signature sonic approach." You can pre-order "Wilderness of Mirrors," due for release on September 16th, here: https://blackangels.bandcamp.com/album/wilderness-of-mirrors |

Pitchfork listed “Bunny Is a Rider” as the best song of 2021. -- The artist said, "The song itself is about freedom via disappearance. You know, we’re all so available and beholden to each other. I wrote the chorus without thinking about it, which is kind of how I do a lot of my initial lyric writing, and then I go back and unpack it and usually discover that it meant something – which is how this chorus happened. It’s really just about being unavailable and being slippery and the power of non-response, which is [a] freedom that we rarely have. It’s also about the sexiness of being mysterious and being unavailable. Bunny is all of us in that way, at our most slippery." In the visual for this song, which Polachek co-directed with Matt Copson, the musician dances through a maze of boxes. “‘Bunny Is a Rider’ takes place in the storage facility of my mind,” Polachek remarked in a statement. “In this labyrinth, the camera is the Minotaur, but I’m the Matador so it’s game on. But like I said before, I can teleport.”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_V2ccs_Urk |

The latest single from the just-released "Cheat Codes" features Michael Kiwanuka. --- “For ‘Aquamarine,’ when I heard the music I just had a feeling to sing about standing up for something that’s unique and following that path,” Kiwanuka shared in a statement. “I don’t know why but that’s what came out. Sometimes when you’re following something that’s unique to you it’s as if ‘enemies are all around.’ At times life can feel fragile like ‘everything’s burning down.’ For some reason the chords and music made me feel that way.” -- Here's the the "Aquamarine" video: https://youtu.be/MHvNapx5PFo |

Featuring soaring vocals from Portuguese vocalist, producer, and multi-instrumentalist MARO. "It’s funny because we tried so many different collaborations with vocalists in varying genres to try to find the right fit for this song when we first made it, but for whatever reason nothing felt right," said the duo about the track. "We’ve been big fans of MARO’s and when we sent her a short handful of demos, this was the one she resonated with and we knew she was going to do something really special with it. Truthfully, you would have to ask MARO the meaning of this tune, but to us, 'Better Now' is about the realization that putting yourself out there is always worth it in the end." --- See the official video for this song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2wUO2657VWY |

Nation of Language will be Live on KEXP from the THING Festival in Port Townsend, WA on Sunday, August 28th, at 2:30 p.m. -- "I hoped in making this album to create the space to openly ache for something. My favorite songs have always allowed me to indulge in that kind of longing, and this album was designed very simply to afford the same room to the listener. If I can build the structure to effectively pass that along to other people, I’ll feel like I’ve done something worthwhile." --Ian Devaney https://bit.ly/3sjFVcB |

Nabihah Iqbal is a musician, producer, DJ and broadcaster from London. -- Iqbal explained about this second track off her debut album: “‘Something More’ is a song about a universal feeling that everyone shares, even if they try to hide or ignore it. It's about how true happiness and freedom only exist in the dimension of our fantasies, dreams, and private thoughts. The reality of our physical existence constantly leaves us dissatisfied, frustrated and yearning for ‘something more,’ even though we'll never find a way to remedy these feelings.": https://bit.ly/3bykD1t |
