Personal Jesus [Remix]

1989 REMIXED! Yesterday’s deep dive into 1989 was so much fun, with so much great music, today I’m going to play 1989 remixed! Holier Than Thou mix! The song was inspired by the book Elvis and Me by Priscilla Presley. According to songwriter Martin Gore, "It's a song about being a Jesus for somebody else, someone to give you hope and care. It's about how Elvis Presley was her man and her mentor and how often that happens in love relationships; how everybody's heart is like a god in some way, and that's not a very balanced view of someone, is it?" "Personal Jesus" is written in the key of F♯ minor with a tempo of 194 beats per minute in 12/8 time. https://bit.ly/3zExhbZ

A Line of Shots

How Do You Burn?, the ninth studio album from The Afghan Whigs, is ready-for-action, and finds frontman Greg Dulli as swaggering, enigmatic, and darkly charismatic as ever. Referencing Warren Zevon, Prince, and Zeppelin all while plugging in to the soul and R&B influences that have always set them apart, frontman Greg Dulli says, "I’m beginning to see there are a million places we can go. I feel virile, ready for action, and I want to keep stalking greatness." https://bit.ly/3Q4lnxK

Talking frankly about poverty, class politics, and the challenges of everyday life, Frontman Graham Sayle’s lyrics have always addressed the downtrodden and discarded communities across Britain slipping below the waterline. This time around, Sayle’s not lost that social consciousness, but he’s also looked at himself and his own emotional landscape, and in the process created something that feels more universal that reaches a hand out to people and ultimately gives a message of hope. https://bit.ly/3S7aZXD

Round and Round [Remix]
by New Order

1989 REMIXED! Yesterday’s deep dive into 1989 was so much fun, with so much great music, today I’m going to remix it! The song is about New Order's then-souring relationship with Tony Wilson, the owner of Factory Records, which was the band's label at the time. On the documentary "New Order Story," Bernard Sumner discusses that he did not originally intend the song to be about Tony Wilson and the tension between Wilson and the group, but admits that growing tension between the two men ultimately was channelled into the song when it was being written. Musically, it is one of the band's most dance-centred songs, with few guitar or bass lines. Like the majority of New Order songs, the song's title is not mentioned in its lyrics. "Round & Round" was selected as the second single from the album by Factory Records' Tony Wilson over the wishes of the band, who wanted to issue "Vanishing Point" instead. https://bit.ly/3zgkD1x

Getting Away With It [Remix]
by Electronic

1989 REMIXED! Yesterday’s deep dive into 1989 was so much fun, with so much great music, today I’m going to remix it! Electronic are a supergroup made up of Bernard Sumner (New Order), The Smith's Johnny Marr (The Smiths, The The, Modest Mouse) and Neil Tenant (Pet Shop Boys). Musically, Sumner wrote the verse and Marr wrote the chorus. The lyrics for this particular track, co-written by Tennant with Sumner, are a parody of Marr's Smiths partner Morrissey, and his public stereotyping as morose and masochistic (Pet Shop Boys would further satirise this trend on their 1990 song "Miserablism"). https://bit.ly/3voj5By In a 2021 interview with Music Radar, Marr revealed that Chris Lowe worked on the track, citing the bassline as his work. ABC and The The Drummer David Palmer programmed the track's drums. The fluid, rich production incorporates a full orchestra (conducted by Art of Noise's Anne Dudley) and a rare guitar solo by Marr, while the three remixes that appeared on the two UK 12-inch releases take in disparate musical styles like disco and acid house.

Here to Forever
by Death Cab for Cutie

"It’s a song both about our impermanence and the anxiety of these times," Ben Gibbard recently explained of the track. "It’s also about wanting to believe in something bigger even when it feels like nothing is out there." "Here to Forever" will appear on Death Cab for Cutie’s tenth studio album, Asphalt Meadows, out on Sept. 16, via Atlantic Records. It follows their single "Roman Candles," released in May. The distinctively heavy song, along with the rest of the album, was produced by John Congleton. Death Cab for Cutie will embark on a U.S. headlining tour supporting Asphalt Meadows this fall. The trek kicks off Sept. 22 at the Sylvee in Madison, Wisconsin, and culminates with a two-night finale at Seattle’s Paramount Theatre on Oct. 26 and 27. The tour will also feature support from Low and Yo La Tengo on select dates. https://bit.ly/3PBWwkV

Eric Anderson shares with Seattle Magazine, "I’ve been recording and releasing music as Cataldo for almost 13 years. After years of DIY solo shows, I moved to Seattle in 2008 and started playing as a more traditional rock band. We’re getting ready to release our 5th record, Keepers, which features pop bangers, alto sax and big songs about my little feelings. "I grew up in Idaho peering over the mountains into Seattle, admiring bands and records that came out of the Pacific Northwest. It’s been a totally sublime surprise to have landed here and become a part of the same community I once admired from afar. Seattle is big enough to have at least couple of everything a band needs (great guitar stores, bassoonists, carpet liquidators, etc.) and small enough that you probably know someone connected to those things. I love living here and plan to stick around as long as I can afford to." https://bit.ly/3S8JEV5

1989 REMIXED! Yesterday’s deep dive into 1989 was so much fun, with so much great music, today I’m going to remix it! 808 State are an English electronic music group formed in 1987 in Manchester, taking their name from the Roland TR-808 drum machine. Band member Martin Price was the owner of Manchester's influential Eastern Bloc Records and was also the founder of the independent record label, Creed. Customers Graham Massey and Gerald Simpson joined with Price to form a hip hop group called Hit Squad Manchester. The group shifted to an acid house sound and recorded their debut Newbuild in 1988, while using the name 808 State for the first time. They released their debut album, Newbuild, on Price's own label in September 1988 and secured commercial success in 1989, when their song "Pacific State" was picked up by BBC Radio 1 DJ Gary Davies. https://bit.ly/3bgDaTw

1989 REMIXED! Yesterday’s deep dive into 1989 was so much fun, with such great music, today I’m going to remix it! Sueño Latino is an Italo house band from Italy, comprising Andrea Gemolotto, Claudio Collino, Davide Rizzatti, and Riccardo Persi. In 1989 the group released the ambient house classic "Sueño Latino," based on Manuel Göttsching's album-length E2-E4. In a later release (the Winter Version), Göttsching himself added guitar parts to the track. https://bit.ly/3Jgv3Ti
