Stand Back
by Stevie Nicks

This 1983 song was inspired by Prince's "Little Red Corvette". Nicks explained in the liner notes on the album: "I got married the day I wrote this song. We were driving to Santa Barbara and a new song by Prince came on, so we pulled over somewhere and got the tape... Prince did come into the studio the night I called him and told him about the song, and he played incredible synthesizer on it. And then he just walked out of my life, and I didn't see him for a long time. It was extraordinary."

Beth Ditto has described “We Could Run” as her “U2 song.” It’s larger-than-life, with her vocals booming over a rock instrumental. The video, directed by Mark Staubach, follows two young girls as they run away together, enjoying the limitlessness of freedom.: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6zNcaXdFKE

Expert In A Dying Field

The Beths are releasing Expert In A Dying Field on September 16th! “I really do believe that love is learned over time,” explains Elizabeth Stokes in a statement. “In the course of knowing a person, you accumulate so much information: their favorite movies, how they take their tea, how to make them laugh, how that makes you feel. And when relationships between people change, or end, all that knowledge doesn’t just disappear. The phrase ‘Expert in a Dying Field’ had been floating around my head for a few years, I was glad to finally capture it when writing this tune.” https://thebethsnz.bandcamp.com/album/expert-in-a-dying-field

The female backing vocals on this song are by Juliana Hatfield, who also played bass on the album. She released her first solo album, Hey Babe, earlier in 1992. At this point, The Lemonheads were essentially an Evan Dando solo project. On the "It's a Shame About Ray" album, David Ryan was the drummer.

Written by band member Theodore “Ted” Ottaviano, this heartstruck anthem describes the frustrations of a girl with feelings for a boy who likes boys. In a 2016 Village Voice interview, Ted added that the song was “written about Boy Bar, which was a very exclusive gay club in the East Village.”

The Go-Go's cover! Terry Hall's version with his group The Fun Boy Three hit #7 in the UK. Jane Wiedlin told Uncut magazine: "I was so shocked when I heard the Fun Boy 3 version, because it's so moody. I don't think Terry kept a copy of the lyrics, because he got some of the words wrong." - https://bit.ly/3yWJNBq

Beauty and the Beat is the debut album from Californian new wave band the Go-Go's, released in 1981. In the late 1970s, Belinda Carlisle, Jane Wiedlin, and Margot Olavarria met while attending punk rock shows in California. The three attended the Sex Pistols' final performance in San Francisco in January 1978, and afterwards were inspired to form their own band. Although none of them actually knew how to play instruments, they quickly learned, and began playing in Hollywood nightclubs under the name the Go-Go's.

The Linda Lindas have just shared their cover of the Go-Go’s’ “Tonite” from the classic Beauty and the Beat. They say "(We) started out as a cover band, and we’ve played more songs by the Go-Go’s than anyone else. And even after we started to write our own songs, we never stopped playing “Tonite.” We love the idea of us going out and owning our town, and “Tonite” is as fun to play as it is empowering—especially the part where we all sing together. “We rule the streets tonite until the morning light” and so should our fans. Because the cover is such a hit at shows, we decided to record a studio version to pay tribute to the greatest all-female rock band of all time, a crucial part of the L.A. punk scene, and our heroes." Oh Linda Lindas, is there nothing you can't do. Jesus this is awesome.
