Looking High
by Foals

Playing Showbox SoDo Saturday, November 12th. "Looking High," singer/guitarist Yannis Philippakis explains, "is looking back to a more hedonistic time in my life, and a more innocent time in society in general, pre-pandemic and before the existential threat of climate change. "We wanted to refocus and do something that shared a DNA throughout the songs: a physicality, a danceability, and with energy and joyousness." https://bit.ly/3j8c80X https://lifeisyours.foals.co.uk/

Angel Olsen is playing at Marymoor Park on Wednesday, August 3 with Sharon Van Etten and Julien Baker! Here's Live Video from Angel Olsen's 2019 KEXP In-Studio: https://bit.ly/3HZvn8G. "Olsen’s flight is both upward and inward. On her vulnerable, Big Mood new album, All Mirrors, we can see her taking an introspective deep dive towards internal destinations and revelations. In the process of making this album, she found a new sound and voice, a blast of fury mixed with hard won self-acceptance." https://angelolsen.bandcamp.com/album/big-time

Hold the Line
by Bartees Strange
(9 plays) | (0 fans)

Playing Neumos Friday, December 9th. The single "Hold the Line" was written about George Floyd's daughter. He released a statement alongside it, writing: "I remember watching George Floyd’s daughter talk about the death of her father and thinking 'wow—what a sad introduction to Black American life for this young person.' It was painful to watch her grow up in that moment, like all Black kids eventually do. “Hold the Line” was written over the course of three days during that first pandemic summer. Through this song I was trying to make sense of what was happening in the U.S., my neighborhood, and my community at that moment. During the marches people were trying to stop the bleeding, locked arm in arm, doing everything they could to hold the line." https://bit.ly/38iqr1i Bartees Strange stopped by the KEXP studio back in December of 2021. Glass Animals' third album was informed by the hospitalization of Dave Bayley's best friend and bandmate Joe Seward after a bike accident. “You go to quite a strange place mentally when you’re in the hospital a lot,” Bayley explains. “I was leaning back into all the nostalgia, the memories and old things, and that’s where I felt comfortable to be.” https://bit.ly/3R2v5C2 https://opensource.glassanimals.com/

Sharon Van Etten is playing at Marymoor Park on Wednesday, August 3 with Angel Olsen and Julien Baker! This LA-via-New York artist’s sixth album is a potent set of brooding indie-pop with an atmospheric, often-dramatic sound combining acoustic and electric guitars, majestic keyboards and solemn rhythms with intimate lyrics of hope, loss, anxiety, longing and resilience during troubled times. https://kexp.org/read/2022/5/9/new-music-reviews-0509/ Here are a few KEXP sessions with SVE: https://www.youtube.com/c/kexp/search?query=Sharon%20Van%20Etten. https://sharonvanetten.bandcamp.com/album/weve-been-going-about-this-all-wrong https://www.sharonvanetten.com/

Life On Mars?
by David Bowie
(124 plays) | (0 fans)

Bowie came up with this after he was asked to put English lyrics to a French song called "Comme d'habitude." Paul Anka ultimately bought the rights to the original French song and rewrote it in English as "My Way," later made famous by Frank Sinatra. "Life On Mars?" uses practically the same chords as "My Way" and the "Hunky Dory" liner notes state that the song is "inspired by Frankie." Into the Wild
by Zola Jesus
(2 plays) | (0 fans)

Says the singer-songwriter, aka Nika Roza Danilova, "Into The Wild was written about the end of a relationship, and what seemed like the end of a former life. It was such an overwhelming, tumultuous time of my life; every step into the future felt like walking into the great unknown. My anxiety was at an all-time high, and getting through each day felt like a nearly impossible task. Songwriting was the only way to feel grounded in what I was experiencing. "This song in particular became a beacon for me. I’m so grateful to have music as an outlet to help me navigate difficult periods, and hopefully those listening to this will also feel a deeper sense of stability through their own big changes.” https://bit.ly/3yo7nZr https://zolajesus.bandcamp.com/

Lying In The Snow
by The Bees
(1 play) | (0 fans)

"The Bees (known as "A Band of Bees" in America, owing to a rights conflict over their name) started out as the duo of Paul Butler and Aaron Fletcher, both of whom hailed from the Isle of Wight. They recorded their debut album, Sunshine Hit Me, in a home studio in a shed in Butler's parents' garden. Butler and Fletcher, both multi-instrumentalists and singers, were avid record collectors and, even more so, avid record listeners with interests that extended back to the roots of British rock and into American soul, as well as a multitude of other directions. Sunshine Hit Me, released by We Love You as a U.K.-only issue and credited to the Bees, reflected their interests and listening, melding '60s freakbeat and psychedelic sensibilities with '70s power pop, and was nominated for the coveted Mercury Music Prize in 2002." https://bit.ly/3ymJl0T
