KEXP's One Day Summer Drive 10: KEXP DJs Top Summer Jams Countdown Rockaway Beach in Queens, NY, became the favoured hangout for young Doug Colvin (later aka Dee Dee Ramone) after he escaped with his mother from an alcoholic father in Germany and moved to New York City when he was 15. He saw the beach and its enormous amusement park as his private escape. "Rockaway Beach"" was one of 14 songs the Ramones took into New York’s Mediasound studio in August 1977 for their third album, later titled Rocket To Russia. https://bit.ly/38t0XuM |

KEXP's One Day Summer Drive 12: KEXP DJs Top Summer Jams Countdown Two years after its release, this was used during a quiet scene in "Rocky," where Sylvester Stallone feeds his fish - but it was enough to get Kool & the Gang jumping out of their seats in the theater. "Nobody had told us," Gang staff member Cleveland Brown remembered to Billboard. "We were watching this movie about a white boxer. When it came to the scene where Stallone dropped the needle on the record, and 'Summer Madness' started playing, I can tell you we got pretty loud in the theater." https://www.songfacts.com/facts/kool-the-gang/summer-madness |

KEXP's One Day Summer Drive 16: KEXP DJs Top Summer Jams Countdown Lead guitarist Scott Gorham attributed the song's unexpected success to two DJs in Louisville, Kentucky who "played it incessantly until other stations in the surrounding area picked up on it… Had that song not kickstarted the sales of the album, then the band was over." https://www.loudersound.com/features/40-years-thin-lizzy-jailbreak-scott-gorham |
