Mike Powell wrote a retrospective of 'Mellow Gold' for Pitchfork, calling it "a quintessential piece of alternative rock, experimental folk, and hip-hop that felt magically displaced in time." https://bit.ly/3uoRznC

Lampshades on Fire
by Modest Mouse

One assumes "Lampshades On Fire" is meant as a parable about environmental carelessness ("Pack up again, and to the next place/ Where we'll make the same mistakes/ Burn it up, or just chop it down/ But this one's done so where to now?"), that after the third planet's been used up, we'll find somewhere else to set up shop and space travel will indeed be boring. https://pitchfork.com/reviews/tracks/17258-modest-mouse-lampshades-on-fire/

"Understood" is inspired by the 1974 moment when the daredevil Evel Knievel tried and failed to jump his rocket-powered motorcycle over the mile-wide expanse of Snake River Canyon in Twin Falls, Idaho. Knievel’s parachute malfunctioned, and it took him safely down to the bank of the river below. Martsch, a native of Twin Falls, was four years old when all of it went down. Martsch’s lyrics only make oblique reverence to that jump, using it for psychedelic imagery: "It’s been a long time since we took a trip to the bottom of a canyon in a rocketship." https://bit.ly/39xospX Built to Spill will be recording a session at KEXP on Friday, July 22; subscribe to our YouTube channel to receive notification when the video is released! The band will also play the following day (Saturday, July 23) at Timber! Outdoor Music Festival in Carnation, WA. https://bit.ly/3NCNaDZ

It's A Shame About Ray
by The Lemonheads
(153 plays) | (0 fans)

30 years old today! In an interview, Lemonheads lead singer Evan Dando talked about the song: "It's spooky," he said. "It's about a disappearing person. It's a very open-ended, grey sort of song. I think it's one of those things, like The Trouble with Harry [a 1955 Alfred Hitchcock film]. Like a mysterious sort of song."

Get Off The Internet
by Le Tigre
(36 plays) | (0 fans)

This acted as a clarion call to activists to return to real life protest. As Johanna Fateman said in a 2002 interview in Venus Zine, it was a reminder to people “not to become isolated in their apartments or their offices with their e-mail.” “People get so involved in online discourse that it sort of becomes meaningless — it’s kind of like being in a hall of mirrors or something. That’s what that song is about to me — it’s about actually remembering what your priorities are.”: https://thefword.org.uk/2012/09/song_le_tigre_internet/

Serve the Rich
by Pins
(21 plays) | (0 fans)

Manchester band PINS write: "The track is about how sometimes we feel like we only exist to make money for other people, it’s a swizz. We are promised things by saviours, these people who have come to rescue us, but it’s not true. “Serve The Rich” was my opportunity to assert myself. I’m saying that we as PINS, musicians, women, Labour voters, and feminists, are here to save the kids, we’re here to save each other, we’re here to save ourselves." https://bit.ly/3ipj4HV

"...how’s the family? How’s your health been? How’s the church? How’s the job?” Watch the live KEXP studio session, including "Beautiful Blue Sky" from 2015: https://youtu.be/s9_U-BqTGug Lyrically, "Beautiful Blue Sky" is centered around a series of observations — light clinging to someone’s shoulders, a high-rise condo, a big, beautiful, blue sky — but it’s also a multi-layered critique of development and unending consumerism. https://bit.ly/3lzeeJd https://ought.bandcamp.com/album/sun-coming-down

Choose Yourself
by Star Slinger
(33 plays) | (1 fan)

This song was based on a self help book entitled "Choose Yourself" by James Altucher, and Star Slinger (aka Darren Williams) who told KEXP that, “This song will help you get out of a rut. This song will help when you feel you’ve lost your way. This song will help guide you. This spoken word song condenses quotes from a very helpful book I read last year." Selfish Soul
by Sudan Archives
(51 plays) | (1 fan)

New music from Sudan Archives! They will play at Capitol Hill Block Party July 22nd - 24th: https://www.capitolhillblockparty.com/ Speaking on the inspiration for the song, Sudan explains: I feel like there’s an American standard of what beautiful hair is, and I wanted to show in this video that’s not what all beauty is; to showcase different hairstyles and different types of women and their hair. I was inspired by India Arie’s “I Am Not My Hair,” one of the first songs I heard about this subject. She talks about extensions and weaves and natural hair and nappy hair, and that she’s not her hair; she won’t conform to the comparisons that would come up if you had a weave or sew-in or natural hair or Afro – that doesn’t represent her.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs are officially back! After announcing some shows and signing to Secretly Canadian, the trio has announced a brand-new album, Cool It Down, which will be out in September. “I see the younger generations staring down this threat, and they’re standing on the edge of a precipice, confronting what’s coming with anger and defiance,” Karen O said of "Spitting Off The Edge Of The World" the title track. “It’s galvanizing, and there’s hope there.” https://bit.ly/3tb8Krk

In an interview with NME last year Jungle spoke about the free attitude they applied to their latest album, which was celebrated for them “letting loose” more. “The older we get, the more we stop giving a fuck,” Lloyd-Watson told NME. “The more you can release your fears of what you think you can be or what you can do, you’re just in this creative freedom. It’s why Jungle is reaching where it is and why, in our view, Jungle is reaching its creative pinnacle,” he said. https://www.nme.com/news/music/jungle-share-first-new-music-of-2022-with-singles-good-times-and-problemz-3236676
