Another legend lost today. Actor Ray Liotta, whose breakout role came in the 1990 Martin Scorsese film 'Goodfellas,' died in his sleep at the age of 67 in the Dominican Republic where he was working on a new film, titled 'Dangerous Waters.' He recently had a career resurgence, appearing in films like 'The Many Saints of Newark' and 'Marriage Story' - for which he shared a 2020 ensemble Indie Spirit Award. https://bit.ly/3MSE2vb Harry Nilsson's "Jump Into the Fire" was on the 'Goodfellas' soundtrack. |

We just learned the sad news that Alan White, drummer for the band Yes, has died at the age of 72 in his Seattle-area home. His wife confirmed the news, stating the cause of death as a brief illness. In addition to Yes, Alan drummed with John Lennon (on the famous track "Imagine" which John played at the end of his show today, among others), George Harrison, Ginger Baker's Air Force, and Joe Cocker. Alan joined Yes in 1972, bringing a powerful rock edge and sonic consistency to the band. His run with the band lasted more than half a century, culminating in 2021's album, 'The Quest.' https://bbc.in/3wLMKEC |

Happy Birthday, Kayci!! "Birthday" is the song that brought Björk into the popular American consciousness. Released in August 1987 on the Sugarcubes debut album 'Life's Too Good,' it was the band's first international single. The song is most notable for Bjork's unique vocal gymnastics and for its odd lyrics about a girl who "threads worms on a string," "keeps spiders in her pocket," and "collects fly wings in a jar." https://bit.ly/3yYFnfR https://youtu.be/CiLzlaDYZP4 |

Mitski is playing during Day In Day Out here at Seattle Center's Fisher Green Pavilion, August 12-14. Mitski is headlining Friday night. Check out the full line-up and schedule here: https://www.dayindayoutfest.com/ In this minimal synth track, Mitski recalls the sacrifices she had to make during her rise to fame and the naysayers who tried to dissuade her from pursuing her dream. But the song is really about making a connection. "It's basically my one shot at truly connecting with the listener and expressing myself to this person who hopefully will connect," the singer told Pitchfork. "And I'm trying to give everything I have, so that I can get my feeling to that person." https://bit.ly/3wRpKEf https://mitski.bandcamp.com/album/laurel-hell https://mitski.com/ |

The song is a deep and strong lyric where a protagonist founds himself/herself in another hidden and obscure day, as said by the character, a "God forgotten place". This leading figure sings about the mishaps of sailing into love, being aboard of a boat commanded by Love itself. At the beginning everything is beautiful, but then things become dark; questions began to appear and answers are lost and both events happen with no control. https://bit.ly/3lKVgyr The video was filmed at Seattle, Washington's Chop Suey club in September 2002. The video consists of a filmed live performance of the band rather than a conceptual video. It was one of five videos shot at the club to promote 'Riot Act.' Up to that point the band had not made any music videos since 1998's "Do the Evolution". The video was released in late 2002. https://bit.ly/3NCxII1 https://youtu.be/6XWqLJQ_7_k |

Jason Isbell played live in the KEXP studio in March 2022. https://youtu.be/FAh3q0dowiE This song serves as a tribute to the city of Athens, Georgia, home to Isbell's former band, the Drive-By Truckers. Sound-wise, the track was inspired by Athens' most famous sons, the rock band R.E.M. "Twenty-four frames roll past the camera every second during a movie," Isbell explained to Rolling Stone Country. "I've seen some stuff that's faster, but [it] always looks like a British TV show. That's what the song is called, and I think it's really interesting - it kind of sounds like the way indie rock sounded when I was 15." https://bit.ly/3MUa8GX Official Video: https://youtu.be/ZtgPeNKpnyw Jason Isbell - "24 Frames" - Live on SoundStage, 2016: https://youtu.be/jkNzZFTgEvI https://jasonisbell.bandcamp.com/music |

Jonathan Wilson closed out his live session in the KEXP studio with "Dear Friend." Watch the full session here: https://youtu.be/AZ53E9Y-9Ys Jonathan Wilson was born in the mid-'70s, but his music most clearly recalls an era whose heyday came a few years before he came into the world; the deep but gentle vibe of his songs is an echo of the Laurel Canyon mellow rock scene of the late '60s and early '70s, and it's no surprise that he found a home in the very same section of California years after the fact. https://jonathanwilson.bandcamp.com/album/fanfare https://www.songsofjonathanwilson.com/ |
