This song - which guitarist, Johnny Marr, described as The Smiths' "most enduring record" - is about their frontman Morrissey's crippling shyness. It has since become an anthem for the alienated and socially isolated, and both Morrissey and Johnny Marr play the track as part of their solo repertoires. -- This was a very complex song to record. Marr broke the process down to The Guitar Magazine: "I wanted it to be really, really tense and swampy, all at the same time. Layering the slide part was what gave it the real tension. The tremolo effect came from laying down a regular rhythm part with a capo at the 2nd fret on a Les Paul, then sending that out in to the live room to four Fender Twins. [Producer John Porter] was controlling the tremolo on two of them and I was controlling the other two, and whenever they went out of sync we just had to stop the track and start all over again. It took an eternity." |

Peter Hook, as part of his extended public feud with his former bandmates, has called "Regret" '...the last good New Order song' New Order performed this song live for the long-standing British music show “Top of the Pops” in 1993. However, instead of doing so in a studio they actually filmed the performance in California on the set of “Baywatch”, with the series’ star, David Hasselhoff, even making a cameo appearance.: https://youtu.be/JfI8pJQbcZQ |

In the original," Ian Curtis gifted his Joy Division bandmates with their only hit - and his own epitaph." Built around a hypnotic Peter Hook bassline that mirrors a silvery synthesizer riff played by Bernard Sumner, the song is full of desperation and resentment, sadness and loss. The song is completed with a frenetic drum track from Stephen Morris. "Love Will Tear Us Apart" was a cynical and tongue in cheek retort to the Neil Sedaka song “Love Will Keep Us Together” made famous by Captain and Tennille. The song’s lyrics, in retrospect, were an obvious reference to singer Ian Curtis’ failing marriage. -- Here's the story behind the song: https://www.loudersound.com/features/the-story-behind-the-song-love-will-tear-us-apart-by-joy-division |

Speaking of Fleetwood Mac... Fleetwood recruited the University of Southern California Trojan Marching Band after encountering a brass band outside his hotel room in the French fishing village of Barfleur. “I was in a room in the town square with a horrific hangover, and I was woken by the sound of the local brass band that relentlessly went round and round the square,” he said 2015. “As the day went on, they got drunker and drunker. But one thing was apparent. Everyone followed the brass band around the town, and I thought, ‘What a good idea!'” The massive, 112-piece USC band tracked their performance live at L.A.’s Dodger Stadium.: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ATMR5ettHz8 |
