"Please play L7 Pretend that we're Dead. Much appreciated Thanks, Sally in Denver" - While writing this track, Donita Sparks was in her apartment in Echo Park trying to write lyrics to a cassette she had made. She was heartbroken at the time due to a recent breakup, and she says the first thing that came to her was, "I just pretend that you're dead." She did not mean it as wanting her former paramour to be dead but felt that the only way she could get through the breakup was to pretend he was dead. Then, immediately, in her mind, she thought "I'm not writing that. It's just not gonna happen. What about, "pretend we're dead"? I liked that because that was a children’s game. And then it became kind of a commentary on Reagan/Bush–era apathy." Read the full oral history of this song here: https://www.spin.com/2012/03/l7-look-back-20-years-pretend-were-dead/ |

The title of Fontaines D.C.'s forthcoming album, Skinty Fia, draws its name from an old Irish cuss word that translates to “the damnation of the deer”. The album is scheduled to released on April 22, 2022. https://fontainesdc.com/ |

Cut Copy released In Ghost Colours on this day in 2008. In Ghost Colors is the second studio album by Cut Copy. Lead vocalist, Dan Whitford, said that the sound of In Ghost Colours is the closest the band has come to the sound they are after: "The album is a lot more realised than the first one. I think all of us, when we think of the first one, we agree we sort of got half way there. But on the new one we got a lot closer to the sort of sounds we're after. There are some different aspects to it – more layered, more dynamic, as well as some more loud, dance-y sections to it. And with the guitar there were many-layered sections as well. It got the real highs and lows, the real floaty bits, which I think is sort of a secret to our sound, with a lot of segues so that it just sort of flows together. And I think it's a lot more, kind of... complete." |

This track off the third album from the Swedish band is based off a real person. Andrew Wyatt of Miike Snow told Notion in 2016 that this album, "kicked off with the first time anyone’s really ever broken my heart and it was a long process of recovery, much longer than I thought it would be." |

Greene said: “In my mind thereʼs a real soothing, meditative core to 'Taurus' and the almost relentless repetitive nature of the aggressive breaks is meant to tip over into full mediation mode. Thereʼs angst - but thereʼs trying to move through it.” https://bit.ly/3uf2tLf https://www.jacquesgreene.com/ https://jacquesgreene.bandcamp.com/ |

Kae Tempest is joined by BROCKHAMPTON's Kevin Abstract in "More Pressure." According to a statement from Tempest, the new album, 'The Line Is A Curve' "is about letting go. Of shame, anxiety, isolation, and falling instead into surrender," Kae says. "I want people to feel welcomed into this record, by me, the person who made it, and I have let go of some of my airier concerns. I feel less shame in my body because I am not hiding from the world anymore. I wanted to show my face, and I dreamed of it being Wolfgang Tillmans who took the portrait." https://bit.ly/3AL3xt1 Kae Tempest has visited the KEXP studio a few times in the past. Depeche Mode released their eighth studio album, Songs of Faith and Devotion, on this day in 1993! Songs of Faith and Devotion was recorded over eight months in a rented villa in Madrid during 1992, as well as later sessions in Hamburg and London. Following his work on U2's seventh studio album, producer Flood suggested the idea of building their own studio in a rented house where the band would live and work, the same process having yielded huge successes for U2. A studio was set up in the basement of the villa, with two drum kits using different spaces to achieve different sounds. The band had become aware of getting caught in easy routines in the studio leading to boredom and thus wanted to change as many aspects to their approach to the recording as possible. |

Good morning, early birds! - Uncut commented to frontman James Murphy that the track is "insane." He responded: "I played it for my wife and by the back 20 per cent, she was leaning back in her chair: 'That might be too much... 'So I had to remix it and make some space. That song, for a really long time was just the drum at the start, a little percussion and voice, that's all it was. (Then) it just got bonkers. It was a bit of a beast to wrangle."
