The One I Love
by R.E.M.
(64 plays) | (0 fans)

Often misinterpreted as a love song, R.E.M.'s first hit single is just the opposite. Michael Stipe describes this song as about using people over and over. It's deceptive because it could be a love song until the line, "A simple prop to occupy my time." Speaking to Mojo in 2016, Stipe said that he wasn't at all dismayed that so many people misinterpreted the sarcastic and spiteful lyrics as a straightforward love song. "I didn't like the song to begin with," he explained. "I felt it was too brutal. I thought the sentiment was too difficult to put out into the world. But people misunderstood it, so it was fine. Now it's a love song, so that's fine."

Love Is Back
by Celeste
(25 plays) | (0 fans)

This London-based artist’s debut album is a promising set of retro-leaning, jazz-tinged R&B that’s reminiscent at times of Adele along with Amy Winehouse, featuring a warm, soulful sound with acoustic and electric guitars, keyboards, horns, strings and more accompanying her dynamic, smoky vocals and lyrics of love, loss and autonomy. https://www.kexp.org/read/2021/2/15/new-music-reviews-215/ https://www.celesteofficial.com/

and members Andy Fletcher and Martin Gore both explained the album's title was conceived as a joke. Fletcher said, "The title's ... a bit tongue-in-cheek, really. Everyone is telling us we should make more commercial music, so that's the reason we chose that title."

Happy New Year
by Let's Eat Grandma
(17 plays) | (0 fans)

UK duo Let’s Eat Grandma announced in November the forthcoming release of their third album and “Happy New Year” is our latest preview. Rosa Walton of the band said of the track Walton said in a statement: “I wrote ‘Happy New Year’ after a breakdown between [Jenny Hollingworth and me] that lasted for a long period of time, to communicate to her how important she is to me and how our bond and care for each other goes much deeper than this difficult time. I used the setting of New Year as both an opportunity for reflection, looking back nostalgically through childhood memories that we shared, and to represent the beginning of a fresh chapter for us. I’d been struggling to come to terms with the fact that our relationship had changed, but as the song and time progresses I come to accept that it couldn’t stay the way it was when we were kids forever, and start to view it as a positive thing – because now we have been able to grow into our own individual selves.” Two Ribbons is out on April 8th via Transgressive Records.

Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa
by Vampire Weekend
(115 plays) | (0 fans)

In 2005, Vampire Weekend vocalist Ezra Koenig travelled through London en route to India and said that the trip got him "thinking a lot about colonialism and the aesthetic connections between preppy culture and the native cultures of places like Africa and India." This inspired Koenig to write a short story exploring those connections, and called it "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa," after which the song was named. "Kwassa kwassa" refers to a dance rhythm from Congo (DRC). https://bit.ly/2U1OpWM Koenig also confides, "The beats make this one of our most African sounding songs, but I think it also sounds Irish. I was listening to accordion music when I wrote it."

The song takes its name from the Ballon d’Or, a prestigious professional soccer trophy for extraordinary male players, and finds the Nigerian superstars exchanging slick boasts in their native Pidgin and Yoruba dialects. -- See the official music video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9ze8zVf8jc
