In the years preceding "Mood Valiant," Naomi Saalfield, AKA Nai Palm, lead singer of the Australian band Hiatus Kaiyote, suffered a breast cancer diagnosis, mastectomy and the death of her beloved rescue bird, Charlie. She said, "... loss is not a new thing to me; I’m an orphan and I’ve experienced a lot of death in my life. It’s a blessing to have the arts as a vehicle to process it. Sometimes the only thing that can really heal you is music.” -- You don't want to miss the video for "And We Go Gentle." Nai Palm said, ""For the video, I wanted to reference the Japanese film style of tokusatsu in celebration of Mothra (an angel moth that can defeat Godzilla). I made the costume myself out of aquarium plants and old tabi boots.": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2a1u-QxC-rk |

Think this is about waiting for a woman? Think again. Mick Jagger said in 1983: "Just let me be cynical for a moment. First of all, it's really NOT about waiting on a woman friend. It's just about a FRIEND; it doesn't matter if it's a man or a woman. I can see people saying, Oh, we're all much older now, Mick's writing this much more compassionate stuff, must be about a real person. But that's only in their perception of it." -- There are no musician credits on "Tattoo You," but it's clear that Mick Taylor contributed on guitar, which he was not compensated for. Taylor left The Stones in 1974. -- The Stones hired jazz saxophonist Sonny Rollins to play on the "Tattoo You" album. He played on this as well as the tracks "Neighbours" and "Slave." This also features Nicky Hopkins on piano, Jimmy Miller on percussion and Kasper Winding on tambourine. |

D'Angelo's third album was released on this date in 2014! -- “1000 Deaths”" should be interpreted in the album’s context. The album was supposed to be released in 2015, but after the unarmed Michael Brown got shot by a police officer in Ferguson, D'Angelo decided he couldn’t just stand and watch. He and his label RCA spent a month working many all-nighters to be able to finish the album as soon as possible.: https://www.npr.org/transcripts/371419160 The song folds in the old adage about cowards and soldiers into a word about guns, fear and desperation, and contains a message similar to the 1964 speech, "By Any Means Necessary," by Malcom X. Here are the lyrics: https://genius.com/Dangelo-and-the-vanguard-1000-deaths-live-lyrics |
