Motorway to Roswell
by Pixies
(12 plays) | (0 fans)

This one's for Jonas in rainy Belgium! -- This song refers to the infamous, alleged “UFO incident" near Roswell, New Mexico in June of 1947. In the incident, a nuclear test surveillance balloon from Project Mogul crashed at a ranch, although it was initially reported to be a U.S. Air Force weather balloon. However, conspiracies of a government cover-up, with it really being aliens who crashed in a UFO, continue to hold sway today. In the song, Black Francis narrates the flight, tragic crash, and death of an alien, who is described as having been visiting Earth on vacation.

He’s previously collaborated with 21 Savage on “This Is America” and “monster” in 2018. The track’s title, like the rest of the album’s track titles, comes from the time the song plays in the album’s runtime.

Dog It
by Digable Planets
(46 plays) | (0 fans)

“Dog It“ juxtaposed animated sax and vibraphone turns by Donald “Duck” Harrison and Bill Lounge, respectively. -- In addition to Shabazz Palaces and other projects, Seattle's Ishmael Butler is part of the influential Digable Planets. Written and recorded in Brooklyn, the trio's 'Blowout Comb' features a diverse range of samples and live instruments, and contains lyrical themes of the inner city and black nationalism. It also features guest appearances from Guru of Gang Starr, Jeru the Damaja, and DJ Jazzy Joyce. Many critics call this Digable Planets' best album. (Sidenote: Our own Larry Mizell, Jr. wrote the liner notes for the album's 2013 reissue by Light in the Attic Records.)

Do You Even Care Anymore?
by Wajatta
(15 plays) | (0 fans)

Wajatta is the group formed by beat-boxer/comedian/musician Reggie Watts and electronic music artist/DJ/producer John Tejada (note the mashup name). -- The duo describe Wajatta's music as “electronic dance music with its roots in Detroit techno, Chicago house, ‘70s funk and New York hip hop” - but the new EP 'Do You Even Care Anymore?' encompasses the next evolution of their sound. “It has developed into something a bit deeper,” says John. “While our process and Reggie’s vocal improvisation work is still the same when we record, there’s just something new that we settled into this time. The music and the lyrics got a bit deeper.” https://wajatta.bandcamp.com/track/do-you-even-care-anymore

Happy birthday to Clash bassist Paul Simonon, born on December 15th, 1955.: https://paulsimonon.com/ Joe Strummer admitted in an interview with Melody Maker in 1988 that he had nicked the bassline from the Queen hit "Another One Bites The Dust" (which in itself shares many similarities with another disco classic, Chic's "Good Times").

Originally the single was released with the title reversed, as "Tear the Roof off the Sucker (Give Up the Funk)." It was written by Parliament members Jerome Brailey, George Clinton, and Bootsy Collins. -- Bill Martin's "Avant Rock: Experimental Music from the Beatles to Bjork"put it well: "Although the Funkadelic albums are hilarious in their sheer nastiness and compulsive danceability, Parliament's Mothership Connection is the album I always go back to. 'Good evening' the DJ intones at the start, and you know that you're in good hands. If Funkadelic's music is often about the (justifiable) anger within, Mothership Connection is about that voice of redemption that speaks from beyond."
