Michael Nesmith, singer and guitarist from the 1960s pop group The Monkees, has died at the age of 78. His family confirmed the news in a statement, saying Michael died of natural causes. Known as the Monkee in the green wool hat with the thick Texas drawl, Michael was the writer of hit songs "Mary, Mary," "Circle Sky," "Listen to the Band," and "The Girl I Knew Somewhere." Of his passion for the Monkees' writing and recording their own material, Michael said in 2012: “We were kids with our own taste in music and were happier performing songs we liked – and/or wrote – than songs that were handed to us. It made for a better performance. It was more fun. That this became a bone of contention seemed strange to me, and I think to some extent to each of us – sort of “what’s the big deal – why won't you let us play the songs we are singing?” After the Monkees dissolved in the late 1960s, Michael formed the First National Band, which broke up shortly after due to his inability to escape the shadow of the Monkees. Michael then spent the rest of the 70s recording under-the-radar solo albums. The Monkees reunited for a farewell tour earlier this year, and played their final show at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles on November 14.

Michael Nesmith, who rocketed to fame as the contemplative, wool-cap-wearing member of the Monkees in 1966, then went on to a diverse career that included making one of the rock era’s earliest music videos and winning the first Grammy Award for video, died on Friday at his home in Carmel Valley, Calif. He was 78. https://nyti.ms/3ELuvlw

Sugar Hiccup
by Cocteau Twins

The majority of the band’s output is best listened to in the sanctity of your own room on a rainy day. "Sugar Hiccup", however, is a fantastic change of pace in the band’s catalog, due to its enormous-sounding, stadium ready production values. Every instrument rings out cavernously and continues to grow fuller and louder all the way through the song’s end. For this, its repetition never grows tiring, but mesmerizing. https://bit.ly/3mXf2Hj Cocteau Twins - "Sugar Hiccup" - Live: https://youtu.be/44bJ2xlB2CI Curious what they are singing? Jonathan Bree is a musician from New Zealand, known for melodic compositions where he croons about modern life and love, over string parts that slide precariously between notes and dulcitones chimes. The end result is a musical palette one could describe as dark Disney. https://jonathanbree.bandcamp.com/album/sleepwalking Check out the video for "You're So Cool": https://youtu.be/gxRq23qVE8A https://www.jonathanbreemusic.com/
