This song commemorates Studio 54 in New York City for its notoriously long customer waiting lines, exclusive clientele, and discourteous doormen. According to guitarist Nile Rodgers, the song was devised during New Year's Eve 1977, as a result of him and bassist Bernard Edwards' being refused entrance to Studio 54, where they had been invited by Grace Jones, due to her failure to notify the nightclub's staff. He said the lyrics of the refrain were originally "Fuck off!" rather than "Freak out!"; for the documentary "How to Make It in the Music Business", he said that "fuck off" was what the doorman had said to him when he slammed the door on them; first it was changed to "freak off" after Rodgers mused that they wouldn't be able to say "fuck off" on the radio, but that sounded "terrible," so he changed it to "freak out." https://bit.ly/3rx8W4s

Chicago rapper Ric Wilson has teamed up with Yellow Days (London’s George Van Den Broek) for a collaborative EP, Disco Ric In London Town. "I remember Ric went for a walk to write some lyrics and I wrote this guy in like a couple hours," Yellow Days said of the new song, which features additional vocals from Lynda Dawn. "He would always come back and I’d done a whole new track for him to do. He did a lot of walks." https://bit.ly/3pjMtoN

“This is probably the only song that sounds anything like what we used to do, if I’m honest,” Dave Le’aupepe tells triple j in an exclusive interview about the band’s return. “That’s probably by design. I think easing people who love what you’ve done into something that’s extremely different or could potentially polarise people is what we wanted to do with this track.” https://ab.co/3rxg8h4

Can't unsee: https://bit.ly/3lxgJeB (You'll need the volume up for this) On a more serious note, Phil Collins wrote the song during the grief he felt after divorcing his first wife Andrea Bertorelli in 1980. All of the original songs on the "Face Value "album were intended to be "messages" to his first wife, in an attempt to lure her back to him. https://bit.ly/3cA1luo

Eddie Vedder used an EBow for his guitar solo on the song, of which he shares, "It was a stream-of-consciousness exercise. McCready booked studio time in a tiny studio here with our friend Stu behind the board and another friend playing drums. "We don't have the discipline to sit down and teach each other parts, so you're writing simple chord changes that someone else can follow without having to take breaks to learn them. It was probably eight minutes long originally. I listened to the tape and picked out the better wishes." https://bit.ly/31rJLVH

Pumping On Your Stereo
by Supergrass

Though the title of the song is "Pumping on Your Stereo," the band thought it funny to actually sing the word "humping" in place of "pumping," and this is how it is thus heard on the recording. In live performances, the band has sung "pumping" instead. Supergrass can be heard applauding themselves and whooping at the end of the recording, at the very end of this drummer Danny Goffey says, "Can we go home now?" https://bit.ly/3dhOkot
