This collaborative track was produced and mixed by Leithauser, who also plays acoustic and electric guitar, as well as bass, drums, synthesizer, piano, and percussion. -- Leithauser said, "I wanted to do a modern take on a dark country song which would transform into more of a dark dance groove. I also wrote an entire vocal track over it but just didn’t think my voice was taking it anywhere new, so I sent the track to Kevin Morby. His voice sounds nothing like my own, and his songs usually have a very different structure than mine. I thought maybe he could take it in a new direction. He told me he wanted to write a traveling song, maybe mentioning some places people don’t sing about that much, and he sent me some lyrics. I loved it and wrote my “Virginia Beach” lines right then and there, and sent them back to him....": https://bit.ly/3C2ip58

Friend Zone
by Thundercat

Thundercat (Stephen Bruner) is well aware of this liminal space between love and friendship—scientifically known as the “Friend Zone.” On “Friend Zone,” Thundercat is as funny as he’s ever been. His writing is deliciously petty, vivid, and just oh so relatable (“I’m your biggest fan/But I guess that’s not just good enough/You stuck me in the friend zone”). He complains about screening calls from his potential lover, and out of frustration makes a resolve to never pick up the phone: “Don’t call me/Don’t text me/After 2 a.m/I have enough friends.” : https://pitchfork.com/reviews/tracks/18770-thundercat-friend-zone/

The Only Heartbreaker
by Mitski
(91 plays) | (0 fans)

Back with another new single, Mitski today announced her new album "Laurel Hell," which will be out February 4 via Dead Oceans. The latest song is titled "The Only Heartbreaker" and was co-written with Semisonic's Dan Wilson, who has a long history of working with musicians like Adele, Taylor Swift, and the Chicks (back when they were going by Dixie). --- Mitski said that the song depicts “the person always messing up in the relationship, the designated Bad Guy who gets the blame. It could simply be about that, but I also wanted to depict something sadder beneath the surface, that maybe the reason you’re always the one making mistakes is because you’re the only one trying.”

Good morning, happy Tuesday, and welcome to The Midday Show with the fabulous Cheryl Waters!! Thanks for being here! -- The band Mazarati, which was formed by Prince's bass player Brown Mark and signed to his Paisley Park record label, asked Prince for a song for their debut album, so he dashed off a minute-long bluesy acoustic demo for them on a mini tape recorder. Mazarati and producer David Z re-worked the song, giving it an irresistible funk groove. When he heard it, Prince was smart enough to take the song right back. He replaced their lead vocal, added the guitar break in the chorus and included it as a last-minute addition to his eighth studio album, "Parade." -- Prince won the 1986 Grammy Award for Best Rhythm & Blues Vocal Performance for this song.
