(Credit NPR Music) Sarah Dash, singer and co-founder of Labelle, best known for their 1974 hit "Lady Marmalade," died Monday at the age of 76. Dash's bandmate Patti LaBelle announced her longtime friend's death on social media. "We were just onstage together on Saturday and it was such a powerful and special moment!" LaBelle said on Twitter. "Sarah Dash was an awesomely talented, beautiful and loving soul who blessed my life and the lives of so many others in more ways than I can say. And I could always count on her to have my back! That's who Sarah was ... a loyal friend and a voice for those who didn't have one." Nona Hendryx rounded out the Labelle trio. Hendryx shared on Instagram of the passing of her former bandmate, "Words are inadequate so I will use few. We spoke a musical language, music says it best. Singing brought us together..." She added that the two had just talked and texted on Saturday. "Now you're gone, I can't believe it," Hendryx said. Labelle started out as the conventional girl group called Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles and changed into an Afro-futuristic glam rock group (even changing the name to Labelle to complete the transformation) in 1971, embracing a futuristic look — complete with spacesuits and feathers. After the group disbanded in 1976, Dash continued performing as a solo singer, releasing several albums over the years. She became well-established as a session singer, recording and performing with Keith Richards and the Rolling Stones. In 1988, Dash was asked to add her backing vocals to the Rolling Stones' Steel Wheels album, which eventually led to a tour with her old friend Keith Richards. They became close when Dash was still performing with Patti Labelle and The Blue Belles, who opened for Stones in the early 1960s. She recorded the duet "Make No Mistake" with him, and she took the lead vocal on "Time Is on My Side", showcasing her powerful delivery and vocal range, which, Keith has said in his autobiography, is 'the best version of that song he's ever heard'.

Radiohead are celebrating the anniversaries of Kid A and Amnesiac — which turned 20 last October and last June, respectively — with a three-volume collection called KID A MNESIA. It includes the original two albums and a third called Kid Amnesiae, which features previously unreleased tracks from the Kid A/Amnesiac recording sessions. The band has shared one of those unreleased tracks. It’s a never-before-heard song called “If You Say The Word,” which was once referred to in Ed O’Brien’s diary as the “C-minor song.”

Wounds of Love

As frontman Ian Devaney explains: “Wounds Of Love” is a song about getting caught in a mental feedback loop when a relationship ends. It’s an endless inner argument — wanting to move on defiantly, but feeling utterly lost about how to do it when the other person has informed so much about how you see yourself. For every bit of progress there’s just as much retreating, and eventually it seems like this back-and-forth becomes the new root of your identity — still tied to the same person, just without them actually being there.": https://bit.ly/38TFs6c -- You can pre-order "A Way Forward," due out on November 3rd, 2021: https://nationoflanguage.bandcamp.com/album/a-way-forward

The newest song from Snail Mail aka 22-year-old Lindsey Jordan. Her 2nd full length record of the same name is out November 5th Lindsey Jordan wrote Valentine in 2019 and 2020 and recorded it with help from producer Brad Cook. “I wanted to take as much time as possible with this record to make sure I was happy with every detail before unleashing it unto y’all,” she said in a statement. “Referring to the process as the deepest level of catharsis and therapy I have ever experienced would be a huge understatement. Valentine is my child!” Snail Mail was LIVE on KEXP in June of 2018: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8DEFQ5hVnpU

Would Not Be Denied
by Buffalo Tom

"Hey John! Well, today is my 55th birthday and while that just sounds old, I don't feel old and believe a lot of that has to do with my constant listening to great music and going to see live bands as much as I'm able. Thanks to you and KEXP, I'm consistently reminded of the great bands that have been the soundtrack of my life while simultaneously discovering new bands that are being added to my mix tape. One of those bands is Buffalo Tom so would you please play Would Not Be Denied. Not only did I play the crap out of Red Letter Day while in college in the 90's, this song represents my impending move to your beautiful corner of the world. As I've written you previously, my wife Sherri and I have spent almost 3 months in Port Townsend this past year and after multiple bidding attempts, we could not be more excited to be under contract for a place in Port Townsend. Given the challenges we ran into, we were questioning whether this was the right move for us so I'm so happy the universe has decided to bless our desire to be in Washington. And most importantly, this means I get to listen to KEXP over the wavelengths! Your soon to be Washington neighbor :) -Trey"

Last year, Vancouver’s Spectres released their fourth album, Nostalgia. As the name might suggest, it found the group expertly mining retro sounds, particularly gothic strains of new wave and post-punk. Now, they’ve announced a followup. It’s similarly concerned with the past, bearing the name of Hindsight, and it’s out in the beginning of November. https://bit.ly/3lPk5ct https://spectresvancouver.bandcamp.com/album/nostalgia
