Request going out to Amy & Gigi on a road trip in Nashville! -- According to Parton, the song was inspired by a red-headed bank clerk who flirted with her husband Carl Dean at his local bank branch around the time they were newly married. In an interview, she also revealed that Jolene's name and appearance are based on that of a young fan who came on stage for her autograph. The thumb-picked guitar on the recording is by Chip Young. During an interview on The Bobby Bones Show in 2018, Dolly Parton revealed that she wrote "Jolene" on the same day that she wrote "I Will Always Love You." https://bit.ly/3sfoCYa

Working Together
by Ike & Tina Turner
(1 play) | (0 fans)

"Workin' Together" is a song written by Ike Turner (credited to Eki Renrut, his name spelled backwards) and released by Ike & Tina Turner in 1970. The subject of the song is unusual for the duo because it's political, detailing the problems of the world. A review of this song: "Let's try a little love for a change," wails Tina with such sheer power and liquid grace that it turns this plea for interracial peace into a total Super-smash! Creeping concert and electric pianos herald the advent of Tina's clawing heart -felt vocals. And then Ike's strong vital arrangement sweeps the song headlong towards a series of climaxes. Little doubt that this will find heavy airplay and sales in both top forty and r&b circles. It's dead on target. https://bit.ly/2VTTp15

Good Morning Freedom
by Kabul Dreams
(1 play) | (0 fans)

Kabul Dreams out of Afghanistan by request as we see the violence unfolding in the Middle East. Kabul Dreams, Afghanistan’s first indie rock band since 30 years. The three young guys coming from three different provinces of the country, three different ethnic groups, speaking three different languages, united in Kabul under the umbrella of music to express themselves not only to their Afghan peers but to the world. One of their main goals is ‘show a different face of Afghanistan to the world’. Beginning from scratch, Sulyman Qardash, Mujtaba and Siddique composed music and wrote songs in English in order to gain international attention. Using the internet as the only source of promotion they attended several festivals in the region beginning with the South Asian Bands festival in Delhi India in 2009. Representing Afghanistan in the international music arena stands is one of the band’s important ambitions. https://33rpmvoices.bandcamp.com/track/good-morning-freedom-afghanistan Music Video by Kabul Dreams performing "Good Morning Freedom": https://youtu.be/UlnGa-Opk04

holding the void
by So Pitted
(13 plays) | (0 fans)

“We’re a band named after a YouTube video. I like that.” Nathan Rodriguez, of Seattle’s So Pitted, is referring to a viral clip of a surfer, standing on the shore in front of mountainous morning waves, relaying to a reporter the glory of the ocean conditions from which he has just emerged. To most, the clip is a funny nugget of Spicoli brah-speak, culminating with the hero’s ecstatic assessment of the event with two brilliantly smashed together words. But to Rodriguez and his bandmates, Liam Downey and Jeannine Koewler, “So Pitted” is way more than just that gung ho, slacker-speak catchphrase. “That surfer gets carried away talking about what he loves, because to him that’s all that really matters,” says Rodriguez. “I don’t surf, but to this surfer ‘so pitted’ is following through instead of bailing. You can take that abstraction and repurpose it to anything you like.” https://sopitted.bandcamp.com/album/neo -- Check out their 2016 performance live in the KEXP studio: https://youtu.be/WfUwfwONUL4

Fin de la Era
by Mengers
(1 play) | (0 fans)

Mengers are a power trio from Mexico City that thrive on a noisy and powerful blend of the most incendiary form of rock music. Informed by garage rock, punk, stoner rock and psychedelic music, the sound practiced by the band has been the essence of their art since they formed at the end of 2016. Composed of brothers Carlos (guitar) and Pablo (drums) Calderón, as well as Mauricio Suárez (bass), Mengers started when Pablo got a drum kit as a present on his 15th birthday and soon began knocking out cover songs. They honed their sound playing parties in the Southern part of Mexico City, away from the trendy spots at the time. https://bit.ly/3fYBNIo Check out the video for "Fin de la Era": https://youtu.be/qdjK_CfepV8 https://mengers.bandcamp.com/album/golly-2

Saturday Saviour
by Failure
(19 plays) | (1 fan)

Failure put out this album 25 years ago today! The album was produced by Failure themselves in a process that took longer than their previous two albums, with one song being recorded and produced soon after being written, and repeating this process. Space rock themes are present in the lyrics, as well as various indirect references to drug addiction, drug-related experiences, and prostitution. The album is cyclical, in that the chiming sound effect which ends the final track "Daylight" begins the opening track "Saturday Saviour", and was the beginning of a system of numerically designated segues in Failure's studio work, which would continue on later albums. The album art is closely based on an illustration by Ed Valigursky used for the book jacket of the first edition of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard's 1954 novel "To the Stars". https://bit.ly/3AEyFZP http://failureband.com/

The Mountain Goats performed live in the KEXP studio in 2017, opening up their set with "Blood Capsules". https://youtu.be/-3ZdmXgLAQs John Darnielle About this Song: "This is our favorite song on the new record. It's not on the new record. It's a song about how sometimes you think 'man, I used to be a wrestler, but now I'm not hot anymore, I gotta rob a bank.' It's called 'Blood Capsules.'" https://themountaingoats.fandom.com/wiki/Blood_Capsules
