Living for the City
by Stevie Wonder
(68 plays) | (1 fan)

Ahmir ‘Questlove’ Thompson’s ‘Summer of Soul (…Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised),’ a film about the 1969 Harlem Cultural festival, has gotten raves. Although a directorial feature debut, ‘Summer of Soul’ manages to be so much more than a sit back and enjoy the show movie. Sure, this ‘show’ boasts an incredible lineup: Stevie Wonder, then just 19, in an amazing drum solo that kickstarts the picture, the interracial San Francisco-based Sly and The Family Stone, the high priestess of jazz, soul and civil rights at the piano Nina Simone, Mahalia Jackson (her generation’s great, greatest gospel singer, immortalized in ‘Imitation of Life’) and Mavis Staples in a gospel duet for the ages, B.B. King, Ray Barreto, Gladys Knight and the Pips and The Fifth Dimension. https://bit.ly/3dVVlMi

Ya Love
by King Gizzard & The Lizard W...

Brand new King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard!!! Their third album in less than a year! https://kinggizzard.bandcamp.com/album/butterfly-3000 -- About seven months ago, Stu Mackenzie's household acquired a new human alarm clock in the form of his baby daughter. Fans can rest assured that new fatherhood won’t disrupt the Gizzard’s infamously furious rate of output: Today, the band release 'Butterfly 3000', their third new album in less than a year, following last November’s 'K.G.' and February’s companion record, 'L.W.' But if becoming a parent hasn’t exactly affected Mackenzie’s work ethic, it’s certainly changed his outlook. “During the pandemic,” he says, “I’ve had times of productivity, but then also just extreme discontent — like, ‘What’s the point in doing anything?’ There’s just less stimulus input into the brain, which I think is bad for creativity, at least for me. The less I do, the more I find it hard to create stuff. So my daughter has been a nice arrow to point through this whole crazy time, and something to just reorient any negativity.” https://bit.ly/3wf6dw3 -- Check out this KEXP favorite in a "few" live sessions in the studio: https://www.youtube.com/c/kexp/search?query=King%20Gizzard%20%26%20The%20Lizard%20Wizard

What You Need
by INXS
(27 plays) | (0 fans)

This song was almost "the one that got away." Producer Chris Thomas told the band they needed one more guaranteed hit after they finished recording the Listen Like Thieves album. They thought it over that night, came in and literally finished the song in a day, in time for the album to cut and ship. However, this isn't quite the magic trick it first appears; Andrew Farriss had already made a demo tape with a song whose working title was "Funk Song No. 13," which evolved into "What You Need." Chris Thomas listened to the demo for "Funk Song No. 13" and two other tapes, and picked this one because "it was great. I thought, 'I could listen to that groove for 10 minutes!' I said, 'Let's work with that groove.' So we went with that and in just two days it turned into the song that eventually broke them, 'What You Need.'" https://bit.ly/3jYyW54

Bubble
by Lake
(8 plays) | (0 fans)

LAKE the band formed in Olympia, WA, in 2005. 'Roundelay' is LAKE's most cohesive, adventurous, and fully realized record to date with their own brand of sophisti-pop. It is rich, layered, developed, and at times, avant-garde. Odd time-signatures reign without being too mathy, and sprinkles of horn arrangements, grand piano, and pedal steel put the elevator in the new genre they dub from this moment forward, elevator punk. To summarize the record, "LAKE got heavy!" was exuberantly yelled at a recent gig in their hometown on Whidbey Island, WA. The band agrees that their once lighter sound has drifted into the realm of "rock". https://laketheband.bandcamp.com/album/roundelay -- Check out the official “Bubble” music video: https://youtu.be/iPocl7abq2I

Fight The Power
by Public Enemy
(1 play) | (0 fans)

“Fight the Power” is the twentieth track from American hip-hop group Public Enemy’s third studio album “Fear of a Black Planet”, released in 1990. “Fight the Power” comes from director Spike Lee approaching Public Enemy and asking them to create a song for one of his upcoming films: “Do the Right Thing”. The track was meant to be used as a leitmotif (a short constantly reoccurring musical phrase – usually associated with a person or place) in the film about racial tension in Brooklyn, New York. In an interview with Time magazine in 1990, Lee spoke about his decision to contact Public Enemy: “I wanted it to be defiant, I wanted it to be angry, I wanted it to be very rhythmic. I thought right away of Public Enemy”. https://bit.ly/2DqROWN

I don’t think I’ve done bad for a guy from Slab Fork, West Virginia.” https://www.kexp.org/read/2020/4/3/rip-bill-withers/

Run Like Hell
by Pink Floyd
(5 plays) | (0 fans)

Like the last few songs on 'The Wall', this can be summarized as Hitler's rise into power and downfall into hell just as Pink's life did in the movie 'The Wall'. This isn't as detailed as "Waiting For the Worms", but it is a look into Hitler's terror. The entire theme is based on the dreaded Kristallnacht (Night of Broken Glass translated from German) on November 9th, 1938 which came during Hitler's order of terror. Nazis raided Jewish businesses and synagogues, places of recreation, even homes; throwing people out, destroying what they could. Many were killed and hundreds injured, and 7,500 business and 177 synagogues were destroyed. This is the terror that Pink in The Wall brought over citizens of his own kind. https://bit.ly/36ootHS -- Pink Floyd "Run Like Hell" from the 1994 concert at Earls Court, London, England: https://youtu.be/utLwdxt1UPA
