The Breaks
by Kurtis Blow

This was the first rap song to sell over 500,000 copies, earning a certified Gold record. The album was also the first rap record released on a major label. Kurtis signed with Mercury Records early in 1980. Kurtis told Songfacts: "The concept was created as a tribute to all the breakers in and around the South Bronx and Harlem back in the early days of hip-hop. I wanted to do a tribute song with many breaks so that the breakers could get down and do their thing. When we danced during the breaks of a song, that was our time to go off - to do our best moves." https://bit.ly/3jX989f

Magic's Wand

On this date in 1983 (38 years ago), pioneering rap trio Whodini, who then was sans DJ Grandmaster D, released their self-titled debut album 'Whodini'. Produced primarily by Grammy-nominated British producer and composer Thomas Dolby, Whodini’s first album never really saw any commercial success, however, the album’s “Magic Wand” track did climb to #11 on the Dance Club Songs and number 45 on the Hot R&B/Hip Hop Songs. https://bit.ly/3dXYM5d -- Whodini "Magic's Wand" on Soul Train: https://youtu.be/qj8Lk2SgOx8

“Some of us are from the heart of London’s council estates where proud parents sought after safer environments to raise their families. Community is the only real genuine support & the majority of us get trapped in a systematic loop where a lot of resources & options are limited,” reads another very rare statement from the group that appeared on their Instagram account earlier this week ahead of the release. The post goes on to say: “Adults who fail to heal from childhood traumas turn to alcohol & drugs as medicine. Young girls & boys looking for leadership can get caught up in gang life”. Ending with the question “What would you do if this were you?” SAULT both set the scene for Nine and invite us to open our minds. https://bit.ly/3hqXRwn -- 'NINE' was released on June 25th and will only exist for ninety-nine days. https://saultglobal.bandcamp.com/album/nine
