The Melting of the Sun
by St. Vincent
(47 plays) | (0 fans)

St. Vincent recently discussed the women behind the lyric’s inspirations with Rolling Stone. “People tried to quiet them when they were saying something that was righteous or true or hard to hear,” Clark said. “[That song] in particular is a love letter to strong, brilliant female artists. Each of them survived in an environment that was in a lot of ways hostile to them.” https://bit.ly/3naQjPz -- https://stvincent.bandcamp.com/album/daddys-home

Secret Canine Agent
by Viagra Boys
(1 play) | (0 fans)

As you might expect, Welfare Jazz does not signify the band’s pivot to another genre (despite some of them already having roots in jazz), but it does offer a moniker that sums up their own little world. Welfare Jazz has a handful of those trademark Viagra Boys rockers, but it goes all over the place from there — to arid, sideways meditations like “Into The Sun,” fractured new wave in “Creatures,” even a disco beat and a John Prine cover. It’s in some ways more somber than what we’ve heard from this band before, and in other ways it’s as wild and frenetic and restless as they’ve ever been. https://bit.ly/3e3jNfj

Chaka
by Algiers
(10 plays) | (0 fans)

In early 2020, Algiers released 'There Is No Year'. In the FBI file on the American rock ‘n’ roll band Algiers—which given their prior penchant for repping the Black Panthers, Malcolm X, Angela Davis, and Afeni Shakur, among others, surely exists—under the subheading for their third album, There is No Year, the intelligence should soon read: all prior analytics appear outdated… this undoes everything we thought we knew about their intentions…what hides inside them… as if they are mutating live on camera, between frames… https://algierstheband.bandcamp.com/album/there-is-no-year -- Check out Algiers playing live in the KEXP studio: https://www.youtube.com/c/kexp/search?query=Algiers

Talk Of The Town
by The Pretenders
(5 plays) | (0 fans)

This song was named after a real London nightspot. Located in Leicester Square, it opened in 1900 as "The London Hippodrome," and it hosted various circus acts, variety shows and musical performances. In 1958 is was renovated and reopened as "The Talk of the Town," becoming a cabaret restaurant where many artists would perform, including Frank Sinatra and The Temptations. It closed in 1982 and was revived as a nightclub called "The Hippodrome." In 2009, it was once again closed, this time with plans to make it a casino. https://bit.ly/3vuYE3v

The Leanover
by Life Without Buildings
(21 plays) | (0 fans)

Life Without Buildings, a mathy art-rock band from Glasgow fronted by one-of-a-kind vocalist Sue Tompkins, only issued one studio album, 2001's long out-of-print Any Other City. This reissue affirms that no one since has sounded quite like them, and to even try would miss the point. https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/19181-life-without-buildings-any-other-city/ -- Life Without Buildings play "The Leanover" live in 2000: https://youtu.be/hxJaXEHtqso

Posing In Bondage
by Japanese Breakfast
(44 plays) | (0 fans)

"Posing In Bondage" shows Japanese Breakfast taking a new approach to her sound, with lo-fi pop elements that create an unsettling sonic and visual combination for the new single. In the accompanying video, Zauner traverses a grocery store at night, one of the most recognizable liminal spaces, and embarks on an intimate journey with a stranger. https://bit.ly/2S9AHQJ -- Watch her self-directed video for "Posing in Bondage": https://youtu.be/q2pQIqR-m_w -- https://michellezauner.bandcamp.com/releases -- Japanese Breakfast with special guest Luna Li will be playing LIVE at The Neptune Theatre on Saturday & Sunday, September 25 & 26. https://bit.ly/2SdDKHQ -- Michelle Zauner in Conversation with Ben Gibbard Michelle Zauner’s just-released memoir, Crying in H Mart, is a touching account of her complicated relationship with her mother and her Korean heritage. In a way, it’s also about her complicated relationship with Oregon. Best known for the music she makes under the moniker Japanese Breakfast, Zauner grew up in an isolated, woody area outside of Eugene, and wrote the first Japanese Breakfast songs while caring for her dying mother in her home state. For her virtual Powell’s talk about the new book, she’ll be joined in conversation with Ben Gibbard, which should be a novel experience, given that it will probably be the only Powell’s talk you’ll ever attend hosted by Death Cab For Cutie’s frontman. 8 pm Thursday, April 29. Nilüfer Yanya released the music video for her song, ‘Day 7.5093’ in December 2020. The clip is an ode to days gone by, featuring a compilation of tour and holiday footage interspersed with scenic B-roll clips. “Making this video and going through old footage was fun to remember all the memories again and the laughs we had while out on the road. Looking forward to being back but for now I hope you enjoy ‘Day.7.5093’ and maybe even recognise a venue or festival and can relive those moments. We will be back!” https://bit.ly/3b7qtHx -- To view the video, go here: https://youtu.be/BeIg69tBaEk -- https://niluferyanya.bandcamp.com/album/feeling-lucky

Buy the Banter
by Miss Grit
(8 plays) | (0 fans)

Miss Grit, is the project of Korean-American musician Margaret Sohn. “Buy the Banter” is a pitiless, almost Machiavellian analysis of power relations: “Our work pays the water tank for nothing,” she growls, willing herself rather opaquely to keep playing the ruling class’ games. Rather than divulging intimate feelings, or probing past events with serrated humor, her preferred strategy is to let pointed mantras accumulate weight and then dissolve through repetition. https://bit.ly/3t1emlb -- https://missgrit.bandcamp.com/album/impostor

How Long?
by Rolling Blackouts Coastal F...
(8 plays) | (0 fans)

Debut album of Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, released in 2018. 'Hope Downs' was largely written over the past year in the band's Melbourne rehearsal room where their previous releases were also written and recorded. The band's core trio of songwriters hunkered down and wrote as the chaos of the world outside unavoidably seeped into the songwriting process. "We were feeling like we were in a moment where the sands were shifting and the world was getting a lot weirder. There was a general sense that things were coming apart at the seams and people around us were too,” Russo explains. The album title, taken from the name of a vast open cut mine in the middle of Australia, refers to the feeling of “standing at the edge of the void of the big unknown, and finding something to hold on to.” https://rollingblackoutscoastalfever.bandcamp.com/album/hope-downs -- Check out their 2018 session live in the KEXP studio when they played a few tracks off 'Hope Downs': https://youtu.be/N2zuqY8PrUo

Seattle band Hibou formed in 2013. The band consists solely of Peter Michel, who formerly toured as the drummer for Craft Spells. With The Radio On
by Tomo Nakayama

Tomo Nakayama performing live at home for a special presentation of Reykjavik Calling 2020: https://youtu.be/dKcct9-yLmY -- "With the Radio On" was inspired by an article I read somewhere in which the author said it feels like each of us is living in our own separate time zones right now. I think like many people, I've had a lot of trouble sleeping lately and this pandemic has really fundamentally altered our sense of time in a way that's both weird and fascinating." ~ Tomo Nakayama Read more about the song's genesis here: https://kexp.org/read/2020/11/23/tomo-nakayama-finds-community-through-airwaves-new-single-radio-kexp-premiere/

Sera Cahoone with String Trio performing live in the KEXP studio: https://youtu.be/ZC9O7sp3fL0 -- "Deer Creek Canyon is a beautiful canyon in Littleton, Colorado,” Cahoone tells KEXP. “I grew up there and my mom lives on the top of the mountain with an amazing view of the canyon. I have a lot of memories from that place – some of them heartfelt and some of them ridiculous like the first time I got stoned (it was terrible and I'm pretty sure I was stoned for days.) This song is basically about pull of home – and the landscape of home – even though I've lived in Seattle for so many years." https://kexp.org/read/2018/4/6/sera-cahoone-shares-new-arrangement-deer-creek-canyon-kexp-premiere/
