The Psalmnist
by Kamasi Washington

“'The Psalmnist,' a taut, unassailable post-bop theme by trombonist Ryan Porter, sparks one of the sharpest Washington solos on the album, before a virtuoso battle royal between drummers Tony Austin and Ronald Bruner, Jr." Read a glowing review of this fine 2018 album: https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/kamasi-washington-heaven-and-earth/

The Melting of the Sun

“[That song] in particular is a love letter to strong, brilliant female artists,” St. Vincent recently said of “The Melting of the Sun.” “Each of them survived in an environment that was in a lot of ways hostile to them.” --- The animated video for the song remains firmly in the Seventies aesthetic St. Vincent has embraced for "Daddy’s Home,"down to a cheeky title card that claims the clip comes from “Candy’s Music Video Archives” — a reference to Warhol muse Candy Darling.: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6oji2hmpzvM

The album, "Originals," was released 3 years after Prince's death and featured the original demo versions of songs the generous Prince wrote and gave to other artists. The song features a looped sample from "Fifty-Fifty Clown" by the Cocteau Twins.

Cocteau Twins released the "almost acoustic" "Victorialand" on this date in 1986. "Recorded without bass and percussion, instead focusing on acoustic guitars occasionally accompanied by Richard Thomas on saxophone and tuba. 'Victorialand' lets the confines of its surroundings provide the atmospherics over Robin Guthrie’s signature melodies, while Elizabeth Fraser’s flawless vocal performance throughout guides each of its nine pieces into a blissful state of tranquillity.": http://www.undertheradarmag.com/reviews/cocteau_twins_victorialand

how do you sleep?
by LCD Soundsystem
(7 plays) | (0 fans)

Oh, it's a beautiful Wednesday in Seattle and you're listening to The Afternoon Show with Larry Mizell, Jr. Welcome! -- "I remember when we were friends..." Lyrically, the song details frontman James Murphy's unresolved emotional issues with DFA Records co-founder Tim Goldsworthy. The pair first fell out early in the 21st century when Goldsworthy abruptly left New York to move back to the UK without notifying Murphy. Later, Murphy, another DFA co-founder Jonathan Galkin, and DFA itself sued Goldsworthy for "breach of contract" and "unjust enrichment." -- See the first live performance of "How Do You Sleep?" at the Hollywood Bowl in 2018: https://youtu.be/EvcPGlNjIPs
