Thanks, Bianca, for this (belated) birthday request for Brodie! -- "Though the song refers to the Spanish Civil War of the 1930’s, it is really a reflection on battles going on in current day Spain, England and Ireland, and how the places of great tragedy and art have come to be treated only as places for tourists to visit on their vacations.": https://glickmanonline.com/2018/02/13/spanish-bombs/

House Of The Rising Sun
by Nina Simone
(3 plays) | (0 fans)

The rise of this song in this country and the launch of its world travels can be traced to Georgia Turner, a poor, sixteen-year-old daughter of a miner living in Middlesboro, Kentucky, in 1937 when the young folk-music collector Alan Lomax, on a trip collecting field recordings, captured her voice singing "The Rising Sun Blues." Lomax deposited the song in the Library of Congress and included it in the 1941 book Our Singing Country. In short order, Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Lead Belly, and Josh White learned the song and each recorded it. From there it began to move to the planet's farthest corners. Today, hundreds of artists have recorded "House of the Rising Sun." -- Here's a rare acoustic live version by Nina Simone: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aCuu5fOEB3Y

Cornflake Girl
by Tori Amos

This song is based on a book by Alice Walker called "Possessing The Secret Of Joy," which details the practice of female genital mutilation in areas of Africa. In an interview with NME Classic Songs, Tori recalled discussing the issue with a friend: "We were talking about the fact that the women are betrayed, by a grandmother, a mother, or an older sister - that the women you trust the most are taking you into this butchery. And we had a term for those people, those girls that would turn on you, that wouldn't be there for you, that would maybe expose something you trusted them with, and really let you down - a complete wreckage. So those girls were called Cornflake Girls."

Australian trio Middle Kids' sophomore album, "Today We're the Greatest," will be out on March 19th. Frontwoman Hannah Joy describes the inspiration behind “Questions” in a press release: “I used to drink a lot and most of my previous relationships revolved around this. I don’t think I ever really knew them or they me as a result. ‘Questions’ is about people being around each other but not being close. People who are in intimate relationships can stop asking questions of each other because they are uncomfortable and confusing.” Read more about the song and see the video: https://bit.ly/3anbhVd

I was JUST writing to ask you about Hope from Arlo Parks! Her vibe dovetails perfectly with your “you are not alone” mantra. I am recommending this record to all my students (HS juniors and seniors). I think she does a masterful job of exploring pain and offering hope. I did little else this weekend beyond playing this album on repeat. Heartfelt thanks to KEXP for introducing me to this soon-to-be superstar. Be well! Heartbreak Beat
by The Psychedelic Furs

A heartbreak beat is an emotional condition, not a medical one, but Richard Butler suffered from something similar after the band set out on tour to promote the "Midnight to Midnight" album. Butler wasn't pleased with the album ("there's nothing lyrically I'm proud of on it at all," he declared), and hated performing songs from it. As the tour progressed, the band found themselves dropping new material and inserting older songs in their place. It all was very stressful for Butler, who at one point had an EKG heart scan to find out if there was something wrong. He underwent a program to manage his stress, but had to be talked into staying with the band, since he was so disillusioned.: https://www.songfacts.com/facts/the-psychedelic-furs/heartbreak-beat

When Depeche Mode was interviewed about this song, Alan Wilder said (translated from French): "The only thing that comes to mind about 'Strangelove' is the amount of time we spent on recording it and the discussions it caused. I can't even say how many times we had to redo it. We had to change the bass line at least a hundred times. We also had a lot of percussion that we ended up removing. In fact, the problem was that we decided it would become a single before even recording it and that complicated things. We wanted to do it well, and all that for a result which, in my opinion, is not excellent. The live version is much more satisfying." -- Here's the official video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JIrm0dHbCDU
