In a recent press release, Tamara Lindeman shares that with this track, she is "trying to capture something of the slipping feeling I think we all feel, the feeling of dread, even in beautiful moments, even when you’re a little drunk on a sea cliff watching the sun go down while seabirds fly around you; that slipping feeling is still there, that feeling of dread, of knowing that everything you see is in peril. "I feel like I spend half my life working on trying to stay positive. My whole generation does. But if you spend any time at all reading about the climate situation circa now, positivity and lightness are not fully available to you anymore; you have to find new ways to exist and to see, even just to watch the sunset. I tried to make the band just go crazy on this one, and they did. This is one where the music really makes me see the place in my mind; the flute and the guitar chasing each other, wheeling around like birds, the drums cliff like in their straightness; I love the band on this one."

***2021 EUROSONIC ARTIST ALERT*** Performing tomorrow at Eurosonic, which you can totally check out! (More info below.) Singers Marta Torrella (contralto) and Helena Ros (soprano) started Tarta Relena in 2016 to explore the different styles of vocal music. The Barcelona duo aims to perform a repertoire that ranges from music of oral tradition to songs that in one way or another are related to the Mediterranean. In Tarta Relena’s arrangements, the timbres of the two voices flow like water one moment and then move away in sharpened dissonance. The largest showcase festival in Europe and offering a stage to European artists over four days, Eurosonic 2021 (Eurosonic Noorderslag in Groningen, Netherlands) is currently running from January 13-16, with online access to concerts, free showcases, and conferences. Teen Age Riot
by Sonic Youth

Sonic Youth's standard songwriting method involved Thurston Moore bringing in melody ideas and chord changes that the band would spend several months fashioning into full-length songs. Instead of paring the songs down as the group did with previous records, the months-long writing process for Daydream Nation resulted in long jams, some lasting over half an hour. Several friends of the band, including Henry Rollins, had praised the band's long live improvisations and told the group that its records never captured them. With Moore on a writing spree, the album ultimately had to be expanded to a double album. Sonic Youth recorded Daydream Nation at New York's Greene Street basement studio. The studio's engineer, Nick Sansano, was accustomed to working with hip hop artists. Sansano did not know much about Sonic Youth, but he was aware the band had an aggressive sound, so he showed the band members his work on Public Enemy's "Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos" and Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock's "It Takes Two." The group embraced the sound of the records. Sonic Youth booked three weeks of recording time at Greene Street's Studio A, starting in mid-July 1988. The band paid $1,000 per day of studio time, which was the most the band had paid to record an album up to that point. Due to the amount of preparation the band put into composing its music, the recording process was efficient. The session became rushed near the end, when Paul Smith, the head of the band's British label Blast First, had set a mastering date of August 18. As a result of the time pressure, Gordon was not happy with some of her resulting vocal takes. The band spent a whole night creating a final mix for the three-song "Trilogy" so it could be mastered the following morning. The record ultimately cost $30,000, which led Moore to refer to the album as "our first non-econo record." https://bit.ly/3bGFEbG

***2021 EUROSONIC ARTIST ALERT*** Performing live tomorrow evening at Eurosonic 2021 (more info below), Isolated Youth was formed in 2017 in a small coastal city north of Stockholm. While reminiscent of what post-punk once was, their sound is also distinctive and original. Ringing guitars, haunting drums and strong bass lines are combined with fragile vocals. The Swedes delivered their second EP Iris in March 2020. The largest showcase festival of Europe and offering a stage to European artists over 4 days, Eurosonic 2021 (Eurosonic Noorderslag in Groningen, Netherlands) is currently running from January 13-16, with online access to concerts, showcases, and conferences. Dry Cleaning are a 4-piece from South London who channel post-punk and new wave pop with a side order of low-slung Americana. Their 2019 6-track EP Sweet Princess is a kaleidoscope of images pieced together, where the everyday collides with the profound. https://bit.ly/35J1nf7 The band performed "Scratchcard Lanyard," along with a collection of other new songs, in our studio last March just before the lockdown began: https://youtu.be/rLppqLxALfQ Eurosonic 2021 (Eurosonic Noorderslag), the biggest showcase festival of Europe and offering a stage to European artists over 4 days, is currently running from January 13-16, with online access to concerts, showcases, and conferences. This Is Why We Fight

The title of this mid-tempo rocker suggests a critique of American policy abroad, however frontman Colin Meloy told Spin magazine that it isn't specifically about the War in Iraq. "In some ways, it's political but I have not attributed it to anything," he said. "I think of it more as a song for somebody who's up against great odds, whether political or social." The track closes with a raw recording of a woman singing about her dog running through a field, accompanied by banjo and harmonica. The female voice belongs to studio owner, Sherry Pendarvis, and she is accompanied by Chris Funk and Jenny Conlee of the Portland troubadours jamming on a porch. "She was sitting out front with her dog," Meloy told Spin. "She had just been to the vet and she was soaking the dog's paw and started making up this song." https://bit.ly/3oLRiWm

Nick Urata on the band's varied influences: "When I started the band, I just had a vision of where I wanted to go, and in many ways it looked exactly like what we are now, but you are right, I had no idea how to get there, I have always been drawn to songs from other countries and cultures, and I loved rock and roll, but I knew we would get no where if I couldn’t sing so that was a big hurdle for me. When I met each member, Jeanie was experimenting with Balkan brass and Victorian music, Tom was trained in the classics but loved the Cure and Joy Division, Shawn was learning Afro-Cuban and mariachi rhythms; so it was a great place to start." https://bit.ly/3nM4DwD

***2021 EUROSONIC ARTIST ALERT*** Performing tomorrow at Eurosonic 2021 in Groningen, NL. (More info on that below.) The sophomore record from Swiss synth-pop mavericks Alois is called Azul (blue in Spanish), and is full of warm, life-affirming energies, infused with deep-seated melancholy. The songwriting combines Caribbean disco with elements of contemporary electronica, 80s synth-wave, Balearic dub and hints of trap. It’s a hybridised pop with a heavy predilection for the dance floor, as exemplified by their recent Skiclub Toggenburg collaborations as well. Alois are a proper band. They come from jazz and relish playing out. Eurosonic 2021 is currently live now, with online access to concerts, showcases, and conferences.
