Stay Human
by Michael Franti
(1 play) | (0 fans)

What does it mean to be human? What connects people around the globe? How can we celebrate the beauty of love and life in a world turned upside down? These are just a few of the questions Michael Franti explores in his documentary, 'Stay Human'. Through his socially conscious work in Spearhead, Bay Area-based artist Franti has dedicated his life to speaking up for the underrepresented by creating positive energy during chaotic times. Through stories and songs, Franti captures the energy and drive of a diverse group of inspirational modern-day heroes and uncovers the love and humanity possible in dire conditions and exposes his own struggles, creating an emotional resonance that is moving and motivating at once. https://youtu.be/NaQu7n4NA6s

RIP DOOM. One of his last releases is this brilliant BBNG/MF Doom cover of the jazz-funk dancefloor classic "Los Conquistadores Chocolates" by Johnny "Hammond" Smith (produced by the Mizell Brothers)! An album dedicated to Fela Kuti, the great Nigerian musician and activist who died in 1997. The musicians family agreed to the project and Kuti's son, Femi Kuti became directly involved; recording “Water Get No Enemy” with Questlove and D’Angelo at a session that also included Nile Rodgers and Macy Gray. Overall, nearly 40 artists were involved with the project, covering the musical spectrum: hip-hop (Dead Prez, Talib Kweli, Roots), jazz (Roy Hargrove, Archie Shepp); soul (Sade, D’Angelo), Afrobeat (Tony Allen, Femi Kuti), world music (Babba Mahl, Jorge Ben), electronic music (Mixmaster Mike, Money Mark) and dance (Nile Rodgers). https://redhot.org/project/red-hot-riot-the-music-spirit-of-fela-kuti/
