This song was Amos' call to God to explain His omnipotence in the light of such issues as the repression of women through religion. She explained to Creem magazine: "There's a division of power, male and female power, and there's a division within my own being. There's been a dishonoring of us with each other, and us with ourselves, and women against women, and men against men, and women against men... and that's how the song 'God' got written." - https://bit.ly/2XDqf3G |

Hey there John! Hanging on through this very demoralizing time. Ugh. Hoping in the years to come that equality and justice will prevail. Hope you and yours (and Owen and his!) are coping and staying safe. Thanks for being there as always. Any way you can play Heavy Balloon by Fiona Apple this morning? That album was a bright light of inspiring artistry for me in 2020. Have a great day. Best, Wendy |

Could we request a song/shout-out for our girl Simone who turns 13 today and has been listening to KEXP her whole life? It's been a very hard and isolated year to become a teenager and thank you for reminding her she is not alone! She was named in part for Nina Simone so if you have a chance, a NS song would be amazing. Thank you! Proud Parents Kyla and Sergio |

The inspiration for the song has been debated by the band members. Stipe, in a 2001 Esquire article, suggested an origin of the song. "A few years ago, I wanted to write a song about night watchmen, so I hired one to guard the R.E.M. offices in Athens...He turned out to be kind of crazy and called me up in the middle of the night to tell me dirty stories about the Kennedys. I wrote the song about him, but he was so paranoid he said he was going to sue me, so I changed the lyric from 'Night watchman' to 'Nightswimming.'" Conversely in the past, Mills said, "It's based on true events", explaining that in the early 1980s R.E.M. and its circle of friends would go skinny dipping after the Athens clubs closed at night. - https://bit.ly/3spvGl0 |

Hey Wednesday, welcome to The Morning Show! -- Nick said in an interview that the videofor this song was really hard to shoot because he was just released from rehab and his body felt beaten up. He also had fallen in love and moved to Brazil to be with Viviane Carnerio, the mother of his son Luke. - https://bit.ly/2LGR04p |
