Grounded with a hypnotic guitar line, “Dramamine” places the listener in a heady trance and refuses to let go. The song opens with the lyric “Traveling, swallowing Dramamine,” which perfectly establishes the setting and the mood. It elicits the image of someone driving in a shitty sedan, bored and stoned with both nothing and everything to lose. The narrator can’t seem to “focus on anything” as he argues with himself about the nature of the rationale he tells himself to keep going (“I’ve said what I’d said and you know what I mean.”). When Brock remarks “we kiss on the mouth but still cough down our sleeves,” it calls attention to the narrator’s doomed, one-sided conversation and his questions on our perception of intimacy. Brock sings in a tone somewhere between defiance and doubt as the narrator tries—and fails—to convince himself that he knows what to do (“You said what you need so you’ll get more”…“If you could just milk it for everything…”). Self-doubt may be a well-worn subject, but it’s elevated to sublimity because of Brock’s commitment to his lyrics and delivery. He makes the listener believe he/the narrator is teetering on the edge of a cliff. https://oneweekoneband.tumblr.com/post/41740025424/modest-mouse-dramamine-and-you-think-youve

While this track serves as the album's unofficial "intro," Pecknold reveals it was actually the last song to come together, and recorded only a few weeks prior to release. "It really is this big centerpiece and is the anchor that all the other songs are tied to," he says. "I wanted to make a song that celebrated my heroes in an explicit way — people who have passed and who I want to honor in the music. That was a big focus of mine, helping them stay alive through these memories. Music is this weird invisible form of immortality for these people, and I wanted to do it in a joyous way and reframe some of the sorrow of loss into a kind of celebration." https://bit.ly/3jpOBXN

Like a Girl

Lizzo's third studio album, Cuz I Love You — her major label debut under Atlantic Records — reveals a deep vulnerability, especially as she sings about self-love and body positivity. It's a message born from Lizzo's own long journey toward body acceptance. "About 10 years ago, I made the decision that I just wanted to be happy with my body and I just wanted to be happy with who I am," the artist says. "That was the beginning of my journey with learning how to love my body... You have to find that love for yourself deep down inside, underneath all of that questioning and ickiness." https://n.pr/3mRPSIk

Los Bulldozer. It sounds heavy and sturdy. From the metal scene. Or stoner. But no, it’s a trio from Colombia playing so-called champeta. Okay, heavy as well, but in another, lighter kind of way. Champeta as a music style developed in coastal Colombia. It’s all about dancing, so the rhythm dominates the melodies, and it is full of influences from Africa (a.o. soukous, highlife, afrobeat), the Caribbean (f.e. compas from Haïti) and of course Colombia itself (a.o. cumbia, porro) . Los Bulldozer has been founded by guitar player and producer Fabián Morales. Since 2014 the group is more and more establishing itself in Colombia with its raw and heavy form of champeta. Los Bulldozer is linking the high-pitched soukous guitar phrases to strong Colombian rhythms, funky rap, vile rock en cut-up electronics. https://earthbeat.nl/artist/bulldozer/

Polyrhythmics are constantly evolving. Yes, they are the superb band ten years into this experiment has a horn-driven powerhouse. Their latest album, Man from the Future, is outstanding, their fifth and the first one on Color Red Music. Their self-description as working toward that “hard-driving modern-afro-psycho-beat sound” is spot on. In October, the group released “Zion,” the first track from a new EP titled Fondue Party. It has a chillwave, trance-dance groove, so ethereal and uplifting. Now comes new single “Cosimo,” an Afrobeat delight. The percussion permeates every inch of the song, with killer guitar grooves and the amazing horn section doing what they do best. https://musicfestnews.com/2020/11/seattles-polyrhythmics-continue-to-reinvent-themselves-cosimo/

"Alapathy" is a made-up portmanteau that merges "apathy" and "allopathic" – referring to Westernised medicine. The song chronicles how Lily "started smoking weed to switch off [her] brain." Recorded with producer Brian Deck at Chicago’s Narwhal Studios, with further work at Electrical Audio with Steve Albini, the record was written during a period of self-enforced isolation before the COVID-19 pandemic. According to Lily, BREACH leans more towards meditative introspection in comparison to her debut album, On Hold. The forthcoming record "deals largely with loneliness, and trying to work out the difference between being alone and being lonely."

A Hero's Death
by Fontaines DC
(74 plays) | (0 fans)

The jet-black comedy of their follow-up A Hero’s Death does nothing to detract from this view, instead geometrically expanding their cantankerous field of vision. Heady, funny, and fearless, A Hero’s Death is a maudlin and manic triumph, a horror movie shot as comedy, equal parts future-shocked and handcuffed to history. Memorable tunes and unforgettable phrases erupt like brush fire over the course of 47 minutes, the mood migrating at a moment’s notice from insouciant nihilism to full-blown rage to radical empathy. As one does these days. https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/fontaines-dc-a-heros-death/

Bicep is the London-based duo of Matt McBriar and Andy Ferguson, childhood friends from Belfast . The new single “Apricots” is a wistful combination of glistening synths and shuffling beats surrounding prominent vocal samples of traditional Malawian singers and a 1950s performance by the Bulgarian State Radio & Television Female Vocal Choir.

Three years on from his latest solo outing, Crazy P founder member Chris Todd AKA Hot Toddy returns to House of Disco with a predictably fine four-tracker. Our pick of a very strong bunch is the toughened up, revivalist electrofunk flex of "Wilde Touch", where clipped guitar riffs, crunchy Clavinet lines and colourful melodies ride a rubbery bassline, though the Paper Recordings-era Crazy P deep house/disco fusion of "Still We Are" is almost as impressive. Speaking of Crazy P, lead singer Danielle Moore lends her distinctive vocals to the Imagination-ish Brit-boogie business of "Positive Emotion", while the EP's other track, opener "Synthesize", is a darker and more spaced-out chunk of weighty, bassline-driven nu-boogie goodness.
