Tighter & Tighter

I was keeping it together pretty well today, but then I heard Satisfied Mind. I haven’t listened to that song since I played it at my grandmother’s funeral 5 years ago in lieu of making a speech. I was crying at my desk. Then hearing Inner City Life brought me back to the first time I heard that as a teen, dreaming about growing up and finally leaving all the bullies behind who caused me such chronic depression and anxiety. Made me smile and feel that light. It was because of a (very long story) that I found Soundgarden. While being bullied at home and at school, a lonely little nerdy black girl that I found the words of Chris Cornell and the music of Ben, Kim and Matt. It was like someone was talking directly to my soul. That band saved me from being suicidal and sparked the connection I have for music today. While I still struggle every day with anxiety and deep depression, I’m working on it. Can you play Tighter & Tighter by Soundgarden as an ode to Chris and everyone who is struggling? There’s a little light every day. We need to remember that. Thanks!!! Nadia --- Watch Soundgarden performing "Tighter & Tighter" live in 2013: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6YW-xEYBm2U

Hi folks, I wrote to you last year hoping that my story could help someone else. "depression is not 'being sad'. anxiety is not 'being worried'. " my anxiety was like being on a mountaintop peering over a cliff, and feeling that vertigo of my stomach dropping out -- many times a day, for no cause. Heart pounding like crazy. Dark tornadoes spinning. but this year I switched to a more knowledgeable doctor and got onto an anxiety medication -- and the difference is night and day. My mental and physical energy levels are dramatically better. There is a stigma attached to mental health, like it's more a personal failing or "wrong thinking". But sometimes it's no different than a thyroid or pancreas that doesn't work quite right. Don't be intimidated -- seek help! I again hope my story can help others. thanks for all you do, DJ Seattle

This Memphis soul singer likely suffered from PTSD after his service in Vietnam. In the early 90's, he began recording himself with just a simple tape recorder, and he began to self-release cassettes, selling them at local festivals and corner stores around Memphis. About five years after Frierson's death in April 2010, his homemade cassettes were discovered in a Memphis thrift store by local music aficionado Jameson Sweiger, who brought them to the attention of reissue label Light in the Attic.: https://www.allmusic.com/artist/johnnie-frierson-mn0003526181/biography

Larry - and KEXP in general - just saying how much love and appreciation I have for you and the station. You all help me become a better, less selfish, less ignorant person/father/husband through the use of music and honest understanding. There is a lot of work needed, and it's finally manageable. Help exists. People who care exist. Love exists so you can exist. Cheers! --Chris and daughter Madi -- That's Herbie Hancock on the Fender Rhodes on this song. Poet and recording artist Gil Scott-Heron was a voice of Black protest culture in the 1970s/80s. His own term for himself was "bluesologist," which he defined as "a scientist who is concerned with the origin of the blues." --- "Why should I survive on sadness....convince myself I’ve got to be alone? Why should I subscribe to this world’s madness...knowing that I’ve got to live on?" Solange talked about self-care in this interview. In the midst of conflict and chaos, she says, "Just for the sake of being able to exist in that day, to exist without rage, and exist without heartbreak. To be able to get up and tell my child to have a wonderful day and know that he’ll be protected and nurtured and loved and treated like an equal contributor to society, I sometimes have to choose to not look.": https://improvisedlife.com/2017/06/22/ode-self-care-solange/
