Lights Out
by Deep Sea Diver
(46 plays) | (0 fans)

Seattle band Deep Sea Diver’s newest album, Impossible Weight is out today! The band has been a core KEXP group since their first ever release back in 2012. In celebration of their phenomenal new record, we’re hosting a track-by-track listening party throughout the day, alongside exclusive commentary from singer/songwriter Jessica Dobson. Here's track 2 - "Lights Out" "Lights Out" was the first single released on the album. Dobson tells KEXP: "‘Lights Out’ was born out of a season where it felt like I couldn’t see farther than a foot in front of me for quite some time. There was a pestilent cloud of darkness around me, but I was fighting to keep my spirit intact and not fall into a deeper depression. Ultimately, it's a song about the desire of wanting to be in a more life giving place but knowing that you might need to be carried by the ones you love to get there. Vulnerability is always more powerful than trying to keep it together on your own." Working It Over
by Cults

Cults were deep into the process of recording their fourth full-length LP when singer and multi-instrumentalist Madeline Follin let a secret slip. At the time, it seemed inconsequential, just a passing comment amongst friends, but in the end, it would prove to be a monumental revelation, one that would change the acclaimed New York duo forever. “In the past, I’d never brought my own music to the table because I was just too shy,” says Follin, “but at some point during the sessions, I mentioned that I’d been writing some songs on the side, and our producer, Shane Stoneback, asked me to share them.” “When Shane and I heard what Madeline had written, we couldn’t believe it,” says multi-instrumentalist/singer Brian Oblivion. “The music just floored us.” https://cults.bandcamp.com/album/host

Solipsism
by Fenne Lily
(10 plays) | (0 fans)

Fenne Lily sharing an exclusive live performance of songs from her latest album, BREACH, and talking to DJ Abbie live on KEXP earlier this month. “A lot of situations make me uncomfortable — some parties, most dates, every time I’m stoned in the supermarket,” says Fenne. “‘Solipsism’ is a song about being comfortable with being uncomfortable and the freedom that comes with that. If you feel weird for long enough it becomes normal, and feeling anything is better than feeling nothing." Watch the full performance and the interview here: https://youtu.be/pIUtTCCDOIk

"L.E.S. Artistes" (which stands for Lower East Side Artists) was written after Santi White (AKA Santigold) moved to New York City. In an interview with PopJustice, Santi details the track from her debut, saying the song "is playing on the fact that everyone tries to make things fancy and it's really pretentious". Verve Remixed is a series of albums released by Verve Records centered on the concept of classic tracks, remixed by contemporary electronic music producers and DJs. Nina Simone's take on this traditional spiritual song is remixed by Felix Da Housecat. There is a great scene in 'The Thomas Crown Affair' where the main character played by Pierce Brosnan is chased in the heist with "Sinnerman" playing. Excellent scene setting with the music: https://youtu.be/Ju4S3Qdb_3k
