The 14th studio album from this veteran Berlin-based British artist is a dark, often-poignant set of brooding electro-pop. Recorded after the death of his daughter at the age of 24, the album features 11 brief songs totaling around 28 minutes. While the songs are short, they pack a punch, combining a variety of mostly ominous beats, keyboards and cello with haunting vocals from Polish singer Marta Złakowska (though Tricky occasionally sings, and there’s also a guest vocal from Oh Land on the album’s brightest pop moment). https://kexp.org/read/2020/9/14/new-music-reviews-914/ |

Today marks the 15 year anniversary of Broadcas's album Tender Buttons. Discussing the album, founding member Trish Keenan explained the inspiration behind the song: "The lyrics to “America’s Boy” were generated by my reactions to a tabloid cryptic crossword. The clues were topically about the war in Iraq, and in general, their stance was one of anti-American occupation. In my frustration at not being able to decipher the clues, I began to react to them, make up my own answers, mimicking back the language of the clues. I was interested then in possible answers. I got on a roll arguing with the clues, asking questions back, taking offence to them and deliberately misreading them. What came back was a sort of celebration of the American soldier. Snap shots of the heroics of American Imperialism, the all out impressiveness of its big achievements. Also something that the British do not have in their culture, a self celebratory nature of Americans towards their own country." |

"Alphabet is a direct question, to the audience and the performer, on whether any of this will ever be enough to reach satisfaction," frontman Charlie Steen explains. "At the time of writing it, I was experiencing a series of surreal dreams where a manic subconscious was bleeding out of me and seeping into the lyrics. All the unsettling and distressing imagery I faced in my sleep have taken on their own form in the video." Throughout the album Marcos sings in his trademark percussive and melodic style (“wa-di-do-bem, ba di da we da bem”), a distinctly Brazilian take on vocalese. Like the sweet and foreign sounds coming out of his mouth, Marcos and the other Brazilian luminaries Adrian and Ali hosted for Jazz Is Dead, are able to create an entirely different sound and feel using the exact same palette. “It was really interesting how we can play the same instruments, listen to the same music and they can still have their distinctly Brazilian flavor that we admire so, so, so much,” Adrian effuses. “And to just hear our influences mix with theirs and to make something brand new is a dream come true.” https://jazzisdead.bandcamp.com/album/marcos-valle-jid003 |
