Mad World
by Brandi Carlile
(8 plays) | (1 fan)

In a year full of malaise, a number of your favorite musicians have performed covers that have taken on an extra meaning. Brandi Carlile’s cover of Tears for Fears’ “Mad World” is the latest and is top-notch. Shared on her social media platforms, Carlile’s chilling take of the synthpop tune (one that she’s been performing live for quite some time), along with cellist Josh Neumann adds urgency to what’s already an angsty song. https://www.spin.com/2020/09/brandi-carlile-takes-on-tears-for-fears-mad-world/

The video shows the devastating footage of racial oppression and police brutality in protests for justice, before it transforms into an emotional display of Black strength, excellence and achievement. "We kicking out the old regime / Liberation, elevation, education / I said 'America, yousa lie' / But the whole world 'bout to testify," Janelle proclaims in the heartfelt lyrics. https://bit.ly/2RKQz8N Watch the video here: https://youtu.be/8CFrCk6_0rM

"The music video [for "Q.U.E.E.N."] is loaded with subtle imagery and intriguing subtext—alluding to historical Black iconography and examining the paradox of museum culture—while playing with the ideas of Afro-Futurism and the past being reignited to usher us into a future with a multitude identities and equality." enjoy an Afropunk review of this excellent song: https://bit.ly/39BjowM You can also watch the video here: https://bit.ly/39FJsXA

People Have The Power
by Patti Smith
(85 plays) | (0 fans)

This song was written by Patti Smith and her late husband, Fred "Sonic" Smith. Patti told NME how they tried to infuse the spirit of the '60s into a modern protest song: "It's sad for me but quite beautiful. It was really Fred's song - even though I wrote the words, he wrote the music; the concept was his, and he wanted it to be a song that people sang all over the world to inspire them for different causes. And he didn't live to see that happen, but I have. I've seen people. I've walked in marches all over the world where people spontaneously started singing it, you know, whether it's been in Paris or with the Palestinians or, you know, in Spain or New York City, Washington D.C. - and it's so moving for me to see his dream realized." Freedom
by Beyoncé feat. Kendrick Lamar
(49 plays) | (0 fans)

Beyonce addresses social equality justice and the issues affecting black women in the U.S. today. In 2016 Everett True for The Independent writes that "Freedom" "roars like thunder, and threatens to topple governments in its wake". Brittany Spanos and Sarah Grant of Rolling Stone called the song "one of the most striking political statements of Beyoncé's career".

The Beginning & The End
by SAULT

SAULT have just released a new album called UNTITLED (Rise). It’s the mysterious UK group’s fourth album in two years following 2019’s 5 and 7 and this year’s UNTITLED (Black Is), which came out in June. Like its spiritual predecessor, UNTITLED (Rise) is overwhelming and sprawling, though just a little less so at only 15 tracks. https://www.stereogum.com/2098610/sault-new-album-untitled-rise/music/ Support the artists here: https://saultglobal.bandcamp.com/

This Feeling Is Disgusting
by Mourn
(7 plays) | (0 fans)

Barcelona's MOURN play a kinetic style of punk rock crossed with garage rock that reveals pop inclinations in undeniably hooky choruses. Their latest single "This Feel Is Disgusting" crackles with energy and passion as it confronts existential anxiety through joyful rocking out. Young people face a challenging future with dimming job prospects, rising wealth inequality, growing authoritarianism, and environmental concerns. While these feelings may be "disgusting", MOURN don't wallow in nihilism, instead carrying forth a positive message of life being worth its many troubles. https://www.popmatters.com/mourn-this-feel-is-disgusting-2647098754.html?rebelltitem=1#rebelltitem1 Check out their music here: https://mournct.bandcamp.com/

Nonbeliever
by Lucy Dacus
(26 plays) | (0 fans)

Dacus was raised in a Christian family in Virginia. But she no longer considers herself a believer in the traditional sense. "Coming out of Christianity was kind of a big process for me," Dacus says. "I don't really talk about it that much anymore." "Nonbeliever" emerged from several discarded songs, one which was "about telling my mom that I am not the Christian girl that she raised." She was also inspired by the story of her father leaving his hometown of Canton, Mississippi, for Chicago—a similar attempt to shed one's identity. The resulting song chronicles several different types of nonbelief: "nonbelief in a religion, nonbelief in a city, nonbelief in a friendship." https://www.newsweek.com/lucy-dacus-historian-songs-night-shift-music-823141 CHeck out the full album here: https://lucydacus.bandcamp.com/album/historian

Someone Great
by LCD Soundsystem
(460 plays) | (5 fans)

So sad to hear about the passing of someone great.. Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the demure firebrand who in her 80s became a legal, cultural and feminist icon, died Friday. The Supreme Court announced her death, saying the cause was complications from metastatic cancer of the pancreas. https://www.npr.org/2020/09/18/100306972/justice-ruth-bader-ginsburg-champion-of-gender-equality-dies-at-87 Some information about the track: James Murphy offers his second multi-track album as LCD Soundsystem, and it's as close to a perfect hybrid of dance and rock music's values as you're likely to ever hear.
