#1!!! Paper magazine called Lizzo’s nude album cover a "stunning glow-up, and a transformation for Lizzo", going on to say that "Fat, and especially fat and Black bodies are rarely treated with such care by photographers, let alone on album covers that will sit on Target and Walmart shelves.”

Liberty Belle

#2! “Liberty Belle” was written to process “all the craziness” the band saw while living in The Liberties in Dublin, a neighborhood which the band refers to as “the end of the gentrification strip” due to the many old shops and buildings that are still preserved in the area. The track’s title is from a pub and a clothing shop that are both called Liberty Belle.

#2! The quintet came together due to a shared interest in literature, beat poetry and 1960’s garage rock. In particular, they cite Irish poets WB Yeats and Patrick Kavanagh (who wrote music for Luke Kelly of The Dubliners) as important influences in their songwriting. The album’s title Dogrel speaks to the band’s love for poetry. “Doggerel” is a form of working class Irish poetry; defined by its irregular metric and inflections or, alternatively, simple and monotonous rhythms and rhymes. The word ‘Doggerel’, derived from ‘dog’, is also a derogatory term for a verse considered of little literary value.

#5! Two Hands was recorded at Sonic Ranch in Tornillo, Texas. Compared to the lush nature setting of Bear Creek (where the band recorded U.F.O.F), Sonic Ranch is located in the dry, hot Chihuahuan Desert of Texas. The album's press release indicated the studio was chosen purposely for its "vast desert location", with the songs reflecting its influence.

#6! Very little information exists about SAULT, except that they’re a trio (that features London based artist Dean “Inflo” Wynton Josiah who’s written for the likes of Jungle and Little Simz) signed to Forever Living Originals. In their debut album, 5, Sault fuses African, soul, funk and post-punk sounds.

#7! The late David Berman wrote that he was planning to call his Purple Mountains album Strangers in the Fucking Night until he heard about Lana’s title. On the provocative title of her sixth album, Del Rey said, “It was kind of an exclamation mark: So this is the American dream, right now [...] This is where we’re at—Norman fucking Rockwell. We’re going to go to Mars, and [Donald] Trump is president, all right.”

#10! Also on DJ Kevin Cole's Top Ten of 2019. Rudy Willingham is a DJ, producer, designer, copywriter, street artist, photographer and videographer, who self-released Drunk Reactions in early 2019. Willingham completed Drunk Reactions a couple of years before it was released because he wanted to wait until he had a big enough social media following before putting the album out into the public. https://bit.ly/2RRmzd0 Willingham will also be performing tomorrow evening (Saturday the 14th) as part of A Celebration of M**der Dice at the Tunnel Tavern in Port Townsend, alongside Julia Shapiro (Chastity Belt) and Gomez.
