Talking Heads lead singer David Byrne has called this "a very personal love song," and has said that it was written about a specific person, likely Adelle Lutz, a costume designer he had recently met. The couple married in 1987 and had a daughter named Malu before divorcing in 2004.The subtitle, "Naive Melody," refers to the structure of the song itself. The bass and guitar repeat the exact same phrase for the entire song, restricting the melody of the song to the G-A-B-A chord progression.

The band Mazarati, which was formed by Prince's bass player Brown Mark and signed to his Paisley Park record label, asked Prince for a song for their debut album, so he took a break from his Parade sessions and dashed off a minute-long bluesy acoustic demo for them on a mini tape recorder. Mazarati and producer David Z re-worked the song, giving it an irresistible funk groove. When he heard it, Prince was smart enough to take the song right back. He replaced their lead vocal, added the guitar break in the chorus and included it as a last-minute addition to his Parade album.

"This is not a video about girls, for boys—it is a video by and for girls alone, especially girls who are outside the confines of the white feminine ideal. This is a song about liberation, where “liberation” means empowerment instead of lowered inhibitions." The rhythm tracks are performed by Grupo Cultural Olodum, a drumming collective ("bloco afro") directed by "Neguinho do Samba" (Alves de Souza). It, like many songs on "The Rhythm of the Saints," was recorded live in the streets of Pelourinho Square of Salvador, Brazil in February 1988. Microphones were hung from windows or on telephone poles to capture the performances. According to Simon, "Hundreds of people gathered. It was an amazing day — an amazing recording experience." The vocal track was recorded at the Hit Factory in New York City.

Though O had never worked on a soundtrack before, Spike Jonze stated, "I just love her music and knew she could write emotionally in the way we needed the music to be. I wanted a lot of people working on the movie that weren’t necessarily trained. I just knew had the right sensibility and worked intuitively because I wanted to be this very childlike, intuitive way of filmmaking.": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rAfcBwYuNDU
