"The dark side of grunge music is not always about heroin and death. In the story of the band Tad, the dark side takes the form of careless marketing choices and the corruption of the music industry. Tad was a band that seemed to be cursed with bad luck — with two recalled releases. One album, Eight-Way Santa, had an unlicensed photo of a couple on drugs. The couple saw the picture on the album cover and sued the band." More, and our documentary, here: http://blog.kexp.org/2011/06/17/kexp-documentaries-grunge-tad/ |

Bradley on what he often sees ~ and feels ~ when he looks out at his audiences: "Sometimes I can really, actually look in their faces and see the hurt. I walk out on stage and see that person and hug that person. I try to hug all I can…Sometimes my tour manager has to get me, ‘Charles, come down. It’s time to go.’ I just really want to hug everybody." http://bit.ly/1RwwjQT Here he is, in concert: http://blog.kexp.org/2013/09/18/live-video-charles-bradley-and-his-extraordinaires-bumbershoot/ |

"'Ceremony' was one of the last Joy Division songs to be composed, with lyrics written by Ian Curtis. There are three recorded versions by Joy Division in existence. The first is a live version, available on the Still album, from their final concert at High Hall, Birmingham University on 2 May 1980. The second, available on the Heart and Soul four-disc box set is from a studio session on 14 May 1980, four days before Curtis's suicide. It was the band's last recording. The third is a version recorded at the soundcheck on the afternoon of 2 May 1980 (along with 'Decades') and is only available on bootleg. In all recordings, the vocals are only partially audible. After the death of Ian Curtis, the remaining members of Joy Division renamed the band New Order. Their first release was a re-recording of 'Ceremony' as a stand-alone single backed with 'In a Lonely Place,' with guitarist Bernard Sumner taking over lead vocals." http://bit.ly/1coBjr0 |

"It was the last song ever performed by Joy Division, as it was the final song of the last gig recorded on 2 May 1980 at Birmingham University, just before the suicide of the band's singer Ian Curtis. The entire concert was released on the Still album in 1981, and is also notable for including one of only three known recordings of Ceremony. The song was used prominently by the BBC during their coverage of the 2005 Six Nations rugby tournament. Not only was it used in the 2005 Six Nations championships, but it is still used in the BBC's coverage of all international rugby. It is also used for Sky's coverage of the UEFA Champions League, as well as being used in the video game FIFA 06." http://bit.ly/1G9iXYY And for your edification... an in-house documentary on JD: http://kexp.org/learn/documentaries/?docid=10 |
