Sun Ra (born Herman Poole Blount, legal name Le Sony'r Ra, (May 22, 1914 – May 30, 1993) was a prolific jazz composer, bandleader, piano and synthesizer player, poet and philosopher known for his "cosmic philosophy," musical compositions and performances. The Coup is a political hip hop group based in Oakland, California. It formed as a three-member group in 1990 with emcees Raymond "Boots" Riley and E-Roc along with DJ Pam the Funkstress. E-Roc left on amicable terms after the group's second album but appears on the track "Breathing Apparatus" on The Coup's third album, Steal This Album. With the release of that album in 1998, The Coup began incorporating the live instrumentation from their recordings into their live show. The Coup has, since that time, been a full band. Digable Planets is an American alternative hip hop trio based in New York City, composed of Ishmael "Butterfly" Butler (from Seattle), Mary Ann "Ladybug Mecca" Vieira (from Silver Spring) and Craig "Doodlebug" Irving (from Philadelphia). They released their debut album Reachin' (A New Refutation of Time and Space) in 1993, and their follow-up album Blowout Comb in 1994. Shortly after this release the trio parted ways, citing "creative differences", though they've re-united to perform shows in more recent years. TRIPTET is a meeting of minds and spontaneous electrical impulses between Michael Monhart (saxophones and percussion), Tom Baker (guitars and effects), and Greg Campbell (percussion and cheap electronics). A cataclysmic meeting of universal forces: John Cage and Sun Ra perform together at Coney Island in 1986. This explosion of matter created an unearthly fertile ground for sound. 23 years later, Triptet arrives. This bicoastal group had its earthly debut at the IS THAT JAZZ festival in January, 2009. Triptet is a meeting of minds and spontaneous electrical impulses between Michael Monhart (saxoph ones and percussion), Tom Baker (guitars and effects), and Greg Campbell (percussion and cheap electronics). Mazzy Star is an American alternative rock band formed in Santa Monica, California, in 1989 from the group Opal, a collaboration of guitarist David Roback and bassist Kendra Smith. Roback's friend Hope Sandoval became the group's vocalist when Smith left the band. Mazzy Star is probably best known for the song "Fade into You" which brought the band some success in the mid-1990s and was the group's biggest mainstream hit, earning extensive exposure on MTV, VH1, and radio airplay. Roback and Sandoval are the creative center of the band, with Sandoval as lyricist and Roback as composer of the majority of the band's material. Sat. Dec. 8th @ The Neptune. Stevens first began releasing his music on Asthmatic Kitty, a label co-founded with his stepfather, beginning with the 1999 release, A Sun Came. He is best known for his 2005 album, Illinois, which hit number one in the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart, and for the song " Stevens has released albums of varying styles, from the electronica of Enjoy Your Rabbit and the lo-fi folk of Seven Swans to the symphonic instrumentation of Illinois and Christmas-themed Songs for Christmas. Stevens makes use of a variety of instruments, often playing many of them himself on the same recording, and writes music in various time signatures. Though he has repeatedly stated an intent to separate his beliefs from his music, Stevens also freely draws from the Bible and other spiritual traditions, often incorporating mystical elements into his music. Tamaryn is a vocalist born in New Zealand and now living in San Francisco.[1] Her main collaborator and producer is Rex John Shelverton (Portraits of Past, The Audience, Vue and Bellavista). In 2009, they released a debut EP as well as several 7"s. In September 2010, their full-length debut The Waves was released on Mexican Summer/Kemado Records. In July 2011, True Panther Sounds released a 7" by Les Demoniaques, a project featuring Tamaryn and Dee Dee of Dum Dum Girls covering "Teenage Lust" by The Jesus and Mary Chain. November 2011 saw Tamaryn providing guest vocals on Mexican Summer's 100th release, a 7" by Ford & Lopatin. In late summer 2012, Mexican Summer released "I'm Gone," the first single from Tamaryn's forthcoming sophomore album Tender New Signs, which was released in October that year. They have released three albums beginning with a self-titled EP in 2006. Their most recent album Listen To The Thunder was rated the second best "Northwest Album" of 2009 by Sound on the Sound.
